Allen Russell Moss was born September 2, 1938 to Elmer and Verla (Cunningham) Moss in rural Dewey County, OK. He grew up on a farm with brother Duane, and sisters Arlene and Arlinda whom he shared many childhood memories. Allen attended Pleasant Ridge grade school through the sixth grade. He walked to school every day. Pleasant Ridge was later consolidated with Vici school where he graduated in 1956. While in high school he loved playing baseball and basketball. He was a baseball pitcher for a Nebraska minor league team after high school.
He enrolled in college at Oklahoma A&M in 1956 and graduated in 1960 from Oklahoma State University with a degree in Agriculture with range management option in the field of agronomy. At one time there were six of the Cunningham cousins going to OSU. Some of them lived together and they had a lot of good times. Before graduation he was baptized into the General Assembly and Church of the First Born of Vici, OK on December 24, 1957 by brother Harvey Randall.
Allen married Eula Mae (Terrel) Moss on May 31, 1958. His grandpa, Rollie Cunningham performed the service. Son Larry Lyman was born on March 24, 1959, daughter Tammie Diane was born on May 25, 1960, daughter Rhonda Kay was born December 22, 1961, and daughter Darla Sue was born July 21, 1972 to complete the family. Allen and Eula celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary on May 31, 2017. He told her last week "You are so precious, thank you". He loved his high school sweetheart to the end.
He worked with USDA-Soil Conservation Service which took them to 10 locations in Oklahoma during their first 10 years of marriage. They had extended work time at McAlester (3 years) and Tahlequah (14 years). While at Tahlequah he started the Sun Down Hereford Ranch. He raised Hereford cattle all his life, which he thoroughly enjoyed. He resigned from his job in August of 1979 after 21 years of service and moved back home to Cestos, OK. He farmed, ranched and did various other related type of work to make a living. In 1986 he got into the grass seed business under the name of Moss Seed Company and continued his ranching operation as Allen Moss Herefords. Both of these businesses he continued to his death. He served on various cattle association boards through the years and the rural water board.
On December 13, 1979, he was ordained as an Elder in the General Assembly and Church of The First Born of Vici, OK. He faithfully served in this position until his death. He went on countless elder calls, performed many marriages and baptisms. Due to losing his daddy Elmer, in 1943 at the young age of five, as an adult he tried to reach out to other boys who didn't have a dad. He started yearly campouts for teenage boys from the church and loved his time with the young boys. Homemade pancakes were always on the menu for breakfast when he cooked. He had the most fun of anyone attending the little kids church hayride every July as he loved to organize the games and hand out ribbons with Arlene.
Brother Allen loved the brethren and serving the church. He loved to preach and always exhorted the brethren to be fervent and to serve the Lord. He loved singing hymns. He was a good neighbor, honest, hardworking, and always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need. Allen never met a stranger. He served God and kept the faith to the end. He had a full and rich life with many blessings. He passed away on Tuesday, April 17 at the age of 79.
One family tradition Allen started was taking senior trips. The entire family would pick a destination after each grandchild graduated and usually spend a week together. Camping, fishing, sight-seeing, Sulphur falls, hot springs, scavenger hunts, croquet and pancakes were all fun times and made for great family memories. He honored Eula's birthday request of a trip she would never forget, which upon arrival at the New Buffalo Bed and Breakfast ran by hippies, he fulfilled her request and we all still laugh about that family trip. Allen always loved to have a good time and tell you a good story.
