Obituary

Anna Margaret (Miles) Strader was born at the family residence north of Shattuck, OK on March 29, 1915 with Dr. Kete Kerr in attendance at her birth. She was one of four children born to Jesse James Miles and Clara (Wilcoxson) Miles. Anna Margaret was named after Jesse's biological mother, Anna, and Clara's sister, Marguerite.

World War I began in 1916 with the United States entering the war in 1918. In the fall/winter of 1917, Jesse moved his family from the Shattuck area to Dilworth, near Blackwell, OK, so he could work in the oilfields to help support the military requirements for oil to feed the war machine. To get to Dilworth, the family which no included an infant baby, sister Martha, the family traveled in covered wagon drawn by four horses. The family lived in Dilworth between two and three years, making one trip back to Shattuck during this time. They came back to Gage on the train around Christmas in 1918 because they had received word that Jesse's dad, George Miles, was ill with the flu ( Spanish flu pandemic.) During the time they were back in Shattuck, the entire family became ill with influenza. All survived and returned to Dilworth.
Anna recalled going to many silent movies during their days in Dilworth as a means to pass the time. The family returned to Shattuck in 1919. Jesse traded eight horses for a "Brisco" car before their return trip. Anna Margaret recalled that they were caught in a torrential rain storm near Waynoka. The road , being little more than a muddy path, was very slippery and Jesse killed the car going up the hill. At that point, Clara exited the car with her three children in tow and walked to the top of the hill in the downpour. Jesse backed the car to the bottom of the hill and that time he made it to the top.

The Miles children attended Stony Point School which was three and on half miles north of their home. During the first two years, Lawrence (born in 1915) and Anna Margaret rode a horse to school. Anna recalled that on one occasion during the winter that they were so cold when they arrived at the one room school house that the teacher had to come from the school and remove them from the horse because they were too cold to get off by themselves. Anna finished grades one through eight at Stoney Point and one year of high school in Shattuck

In 1925, the family moved to George and Olivia Miles' (Jesse's adopted parents) farm north of Shattuck. Jesse and Clara had lost their original homestead because of their inability to pay debts as crops had either failed or produced poorly between the years of 1923 and 1925. Eventually, the family moved to the Starbuck farm east of Gage (late 1931) which Jesse had leased. This was the height of the depression and Jesse was worried about how he was going to put in a crop and feed his family until he could produce that crop (broom corn) as he was maxed out on credit at the local grocery store. The man who leased the land to Jesse backed him for $50 worth of groceries until Jesse could harvest his crop. Anna recalls that Clara and the girls had canned 54 quarts of cherries and they had nothing else to eat except these cherries whenever Jesse received the grocery credit.

The family later moved to the James place where the family lived from 1932 to 1944. Anna Margaret married Leslie (Leck) Strader on December 13, 1933 in Fargo. One of Leck's first jobs was working as a hired hand doing farm work for $1/day, working from 6 AM until 10:30 PM. They rented a frame house in Tangier paying $5/month rent. Leck was hired by the Santa Fe railroad in 1941 where he worked as a fireman and engineer and was eventually transferred to New Mexico where the couple lived until 1970. Anna Margaret joined the Jessamine Chapter 45 of the Eastern Star while in Belen in 1950. Upon Leck's retirement, the couple returned to the Gage/Shattuck area. They had no children.

Anna enjoyed dancing and playing cards and dominoes. Anna lived at the Shattuck Convalescent Center for the last several years.

Anna departed this life on April 12, 2013. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1975, her parents and her three siblings. She is survived by three nieces – Vonda Miles Henderson of Oklahoma City, Wilda Miles Townsend of Pryor, Barbara Miles Poe of Norman and one nephew, Fenton Miles of Oklahoma City as well as a host of great nephews and nieces.
