Betty Jean Carman

June 1, 1933 — April 8, 2026

Wichita, Kansas

Betty Jean (Cleveland) Carman passed away on April 8, 2026, at the age of 92.

Betty was born on June 9, 1933, in Webb, Oklahoma, to Chester and Gwen Cleveland. She spent her early years living in various towns throughout Texas and Oklahoma before her family settled in Camargo, Oklahoma, in 1949. She graduated from Camargo High School with the Class of 1950.

On March 31, 1952, Betty married the love of her life, Leo Clark Carman, in Oakland, California. They were married for 60 years until his passing. To this union, two sons were born: Eric, born in Woodward, Oklahoma, and Greg, born in Hutchinson, Kansas.

Throughout her life, Betty made many homes across the country. From 1952 to 1954, she lived in Oakland and Long Beach, California, as well as Honolulu, Hawaii. She returned briefly to Camargo from 1954 to 1955, before moving to Wichita, Kansas (1955–1959), then Hutchinson, Kansas (1959–1968), and finally settling in Wichita in 1968, where she remained until her passing.

Betty was a devoted homemaker who found joy in the simple and creative pursuits of life. She loved playing the piano, reading, knitting, and crocheting. Many family, friends and people of the community have enjoyed her afghans, baby afghans, baby hats and slippers. She was also an accomplished oil painter and dedicated countless hours to transcribing college textbooks into braille, helping make education more accessible to others. Betty had a passion for travel and was proud to have visited every state except Alaska.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Chester and Gwen Cleveland; her beloved husband, Leo Carman; her son, Greg Carman; her sister, Pat Ramsey; and her brother, Clay Cleveland.

Betty is survived by her son, Eric Carman and his wife Cathy; many much loved nieces and nephews; and many cherished friends.

Betty will be remembered for her kindness, creativity, and the quiet, meaningful way she enriched the lives of those around her.
