Betty Jean (Hood) Lively, was born on May 18, 1950 in Fairview, Oklahoma to Walter Lee and Mary Myrtle (Reasoner) Hood. Betty lived in Fairview with her family until they moved in 1956 to Alva, Oklahoma. In 1966, Errol Smith became Betty's stepfather. While in Alva, Betty attended and graduated from Alva Public Schools, and would go on to attend Northwestern Oklahoma State University, graduating with a degree in Elementary Education in 1972. On March 16, 1973, Betty married the love of her life, Jim Lively, in Alva. To this union was blessed three children, daughter Brandy, daughter Aimee, and son Dillon.

Following their marriage, Betty and Jim moved to Dodge City, Kansas in 1973. In 1974, they moved to Woodward, Oklahoma. Finally, in 1975 Betty and Jim moved to Sharon, Oklahoma, where she resided until her passing. Betty was an elementary teacher, and she taught at Sharon-Mutual Elementary from 1978 until she retired in 2008. In 1987, Betty earned her master's degree from Northwestern Oklahoma State University. She was also a member of the Sharon United Methodist Church.
