Billy Joe Craig, resident of Princeton, Louisiana, left this world on February 4, 2023 in Princeton at the age of 76. Billy Joe was born on May 23, 1946 in Elk City, Oklahoma. He was the son of Paul Augustus Craig and Nina Vyrl Cates Craig.
Billy Joe was raised on the family ranch north of Leedey. As a young boy, he helped on the ranch with farming, cattle and horses, where he developed a great love of hunting, fishing, and horses.
Billy Joe attended Leedey Public Schools graduating from Leedey High School with the Class of 1964, where he was active in sports, both baseball and basketball. He played with his teammates in the state finals in basketball his senior year. Billy Joe attended the First Baptist Church of Leedey.
Billy Joe enlisted in the United State Navy, receiving an honorable discharge, before continuing his education at Oklahoma State University. While at OSU, he met Becky Hammer, whom he later married, and their union was blessed with two sons, Joe Paul Craig, and Kelly Wade Craig.
Billy Joe resided at the family ranch, and later would live in Oklahoma City while working at Remington Park. The race track later took him to Princeton, where he worked as a horse trainer and made many lifelong friends.
Billy Joe was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association, and spent most of his lifetime working with horses, including many race horses.
Billy Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Nina Craig; and baby brother, Paul Craig, Jr.
Billy Joe is survived by his sons, Joe Paul Craig and Kelly Craig; his daughter, Cindi Jackman; his sisters, Sandy Strickland, Paula Laubach and her husband Dennis, and Janet Matthews; as well as several nieces, nephews, and a host of loved ones and friends.
