Bobie P. South entered this life on Oklahoma Statehood day, November 16, 1926 at Leedey, Oklahoma. The third son of Robert and Myrtle South peacefully entered into eternal life Monday morning, October 11, 2010 at his home near Newcastle, Oklahoma. He was 83 at the time of his passing.
After the death of his parents, he was welcomed into his aunt Dora Queen's family. Later he became a member of the extended families of Coram and Moran, as well as living with his two brothers and their families. Their love sustained him throughout his life. Bobie was educated in the Leedey School until the death of his mother. He then attended the Camargo School and later Oklahoma City schools. For a time before World War II he attended Freemont School in California, however finishing high school at Camargo. He received a special designed degree in Engineering for fire protection installation from the University of Oklahoma.
Bobie faithfully and proudly served his country in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He served from April 1945 to June 1947, and trained on Catalina Island. On his 18th birthday he piloted a ship thru the Panama Canal even though he only had 5 minutes of training. Bobie and Junior Westenhaver had many stories to tell of their service years in the Merchant Marines.
After 1947 Bobie trained and worked as an installer for fire sprinkler protection systems. His work took him throughout the United States and various islands for over 50 years.
At the outbreak of the Korean Conflict he was the first draftee to answer the call from Dewey County. He served with the 2nd Battalion of the 22 Regimental Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division Company H in Schweinfurt, Germany and on the Czech border. He received the Army Occupation Medal as well as numerous other medals from 1950 – 1953. He was honorably discharged from the Army Reserves in September, 1956. Bobie was proud to serve in the Merchant Marines and Army and was a lifetime member of the VFW and the American Legion. He was a 50 year member of the Vici Lodge. He was also a 32 degree Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite of Dallas, Texas.
In November, 1965 Bobie was united in marriage to a Camargo girl, Miss Dorothea L. Cunningham. The ceremony took place in Las Vegas, Nevada. Their happy married life was a well traveled one as his work took them from Oklahoma to California, to Tennesse and many job sites in between. They were blessed with the birth of their son, Patrick Wilson South, in 1968. In 1979 they returned permanently to Oklahoma residing at Newcastle for 31 years.
Bobie is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Myrtle South; his two brothers; members of the Queen, Coram, and Moran families; and by a very special foster brother, Cleo Moran.
Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Dorothea L. South of the home; loving son, Patrick W. South and wife Mishellie of Oklahoma City; very special only grandson, Taylor Austin South of Oklahoma City; brothers-in-law, and their families, Lowell and Kathy Cunningham, LeRoy and Beverly Cunningham of Fairview, Oklahoma; the Queen, Stubblefield and South cousins; special friend and sister by choice, Billie Moran of Vici, Oklahoma; many other family members and friends.
