Bruce grew up in a large and loving family with five siblings—Oscar, Steven, Stanley, Barbara, and Betty—and four step-siblings—Frank, Harry, Phyllis, and Mary Louise. He was honored with the National Defense Service Medal and Rifle Sharpshooter Badge. He received his discharge on May 6, 1976.

After returning to Oklahoma, Bruce married Sharon and the couple made their home in Oklahoma City for a time before Bruce eventually returned to Gage. Throughout his life, he worked in construction and as a ranch hand. He was a man of faith and a member of the Independent Baptist church.
