Obituary

Bruce Alan Stevens, a lifelong resident of Vici, Oklahoma, was born on June 9, 1961, at Woodward Regional Hospital in Woodward, OK. He was the cherished son of James A. Stevens and Myra J. (Saxton) Stevens.  Bruce passed away on July 7, 2023, at the age of 62, in Oklahoma City, OK, leaving behind a community filled with sorrow.

Bruce began his educational journey in 1966 in the Vici Public School system, where he remained dedicated for twelve years, graduating with the class of 1979.  He briefly attended Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva before feeling the calling to return to his beloved hometown of Vici. Upon his return, Bruce joined his father at the Western Auto store, a business his father owned. From an early age of 12, Bruce immersed himself in the retail industry, assisting at the store whenever he could, especially after school.  When James expanded the business to include a tag agency, Bruce embraced the new responsibilities, serving customers while his father handled the tag renewals.  Tragically, in July of 1983, James passed away, leaving behind a legacy that Bruce proudly continued.  Bruce was appointed as tag agent #2207, a position he held for nearly four decades and the Western Auto store transitioned into an independent hardware store, Stevens Hardware.  Remarkably, Bruce never missed a day of work due to illness until 2023. The store operated six days a week without additional employees, a testament to Bruce's unwavering work ethic and commitment to his community.

In addition to his successful career in the retail business, Bruce managed an 80-acre farm, where he raised cattle and dedicated himself to tending 30 acres of hay each summer. He found tranquility while working in his two gardens—one at his home in Vici and another on the farm. His green thumb brought forth harvests of watermelons, tomatoes, corn, and green beans. The outdoors provided Bruce with a sense of true peace and fulfillment.

Bruce's faith played a significant role in his life, and he was a baptized member of the Vici First Christian Church. He lived out his beliefs through acts of compassion and devotion to his family. Bruce's selflessness was especially evident in his role as a caregiver to his mother and grandmother. Whether he was mowing their lawns or taking them on trips to Enid or Oklahoma City to visit family or shop, Bruce made sure to lend a helping hand, even on his only day off from the store—Sundays.  He was especially fond of his cousins Chisum and Colsten Weber, they made many trips to Vici while growing up.  Bruce always took them to parks to play or to the farm to fish.  Thru his battle they both called and texted, giving love and encouragement to him.

In his leisure time, Bruce enjoyed reading and he was an avid fan of Oklahoma Sooner football.  His favorite destination for travel was Branson, Missouri.  He made annual trips, once in the summer and again during Thanksgiving enjoying the musical performances of such legendary artists as Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Mel Tillis, Kenny Rogers and others.

Bruce will forever be remembered as a dedicated businessman, a loving son, and a compassionate caregiver. His unwavering commitment to his community, his boundless work ethic, and his love for the land he cultivated are testaments to his character.

Bruce is preceded in death by his beloved parents, James and Myra Stevens, his grandparents and other cherished loved ones.  He leaves behind his sister Brenda Stevens of Vici, OK., who will hold his memory dear.  An Aunt, Beth Hunter of Woodward, OK., several cousins, other relatives and friends and his beloved dogs Maya and Buck.

He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and the entire Vici Community.  May his soul rest in eternal peace.
