Obituary

Charles Lindy Chesnut, son of A.V. and Verna E. (Bishop) Chesnut , was born on June 3, 1927 at Bokchito, Oklahoma. He passed away in Woodward, Oklahoma on September 15, 2008.

He moved with his parents to Arnett, Oklahoma in his youth and attended the Arnett school system, graduating from high school with the Senior Class of 1944. Following his graduation, Charles joined the Merchant Marines for a period of time before returning to Arnett.

On June 8, 1946 Charles and Jo Anne Lowry were united in marriage at Baton Rouge, Louisiana. They soon returned to Arnett to establish their home and raise their family. Two daughters, Verna Beth and Angela "Bendy" were born to this loving couple.

Charles was an outstanding businessman and owned and operated the Phillips 66 service station there as well as operating a Purina Feeds dealership. Jo Anne was always by his side to assist him in the business. The two of them loved to travel together and golfed and fished as their favorite pastimes.

Both Charles and Jo Anne were very active in the life of their community. Charles gave great leadership to the Kiwanis Club and the volunteer fire department in Arnett and also served a term as president of the National Highway 60 Association.

Charles and Jo Anne moved to Woodward in 1983 where they pursued additional business interests and eventually retired. Charles had been baptized as a child into the Baptist Church and the church became a vital part of both he and Jo Anne's lives. They were active members of the First Baptist Church throughout their lives together and attended church faithfully in both Arnett and Woodward.

Charles was preceded in death by both his parents and by a brother, Wendell. He is survived by family members including wife, Jo Anne, of the home in Woodward; daughters, Verna Beth of Woodward and Angela of Sudan, Texas; a sister, Sue Kennedy; four grandchildren, one great grandchild and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, September 17, 2008 at the Elmwood Cemetery in Woodward, Oklahoma. Pastor Rick Floyd of the First Baptist Church in Arnett officiated. Arrangements were under the direction of Shaw Funeral Home of Vici. Condolences may be made at shawfunealhome.net.
