Obituary

Crystal "Granny" Fielder, 90, died Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at home in Bloomfield, NM surrounded by her family. Crystal, who was known by one and all as Granny, had an exceptionally kind heart, a disciplined work ethic and made the best cinnamon rolls ever.

Crystal was born November 1, 1926 in Harmon, OK to Edward William and Inez Mary (Floyd) Jones. She grew up in a traditional farmer family in Northwestern Oklahoma during the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl. Her mom worked right beside her dad in the fields. They raised all their own meat and grew vegetables, all of which had to be canned as there was no electricity and no refrigeration. Their home was heated with a potbelly stove, lighting was from kerosene lamps and baths were taken in a galvanized tub. Family was the focus of all activity and meals were always eaten together. Crystal attended her first 8 years of school at Parkman School, a one-room school where one teacher taught all grades. She graduated from high school in 1944 in Arnett, OK. After graduation she worked at the Whiteway Café in Arnett where she met Charles Earl Fielder who would come in for milk shakes and banana cream pie after he returned home from WWII. They married December 14, 1945, in Fargo, OK, in a simple ceremony. They enjoyed going to the movies, visiting family and playing games. Crystal found life very fulfilling and even more so after having children. She said her happiest times were getting married and raising her family and the saddest was losing a child by stillbirth. The family moved from OK to NM in 1952, living in El Paso Natural Gas housing until 1983 when they moved into their current residence. Crystal and Charles had been married 70 years at the time of his death October 9, 2016.

Crystal was preceded in death by her husband, parents, baby son Larry Keith Fielder, sisters Izetta Owana Collar and Winona June Phillips, and brother Wendell Gail Jones. She is survived by her daughter Lois Fielder of Bloomfield, son Robert Fielder of Bloomfield, daughter Gayle Phillips (Danny) of Bloomfield, daughter Lynn Thornton (Terrell) of Albuquerque; one sister, Carole Sue Turner (Gary) of Vici, OK, sister-in-law Jacqueline (McCleery) Jones of Sharon, KS; three grandchildren: Melanie Fielder of Hillsboro, OR, Michelle Galbreath (Josh) of Banks, OR, and Nathan Thornton (Sarah) of Albuquerque; four great-grandchildren: Seth, Lydia and Micah Galbreath, and Deven Escalante; numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and wonderful family friends.

The family wishes to thank the hospice employees of Basin Home Health Care for their excellent end-of-life care.
