Obituary

Daniel "Danny" Lee Smith was born October 14, 1923, to Dan and Lena (Nixon) Smith at Meno, Oklahoma, the eldest of six children, big brother to five devoted sisters. He departed this life August 21, 2012, at the age of 88 in Enid, Oklahoma.
Danny grew up in Enid, Oklahoma, working with his father at their used car lot. Danny was quite a storyteller, and often entertained family and friends with stories from these years as a child and adolescent in Enid. In 1942, he was drafted into the United States Navy where he served until 1946.
Danny often recounted the story of how as a little boy he loved to play with toy farm equipment, but never dreamed of owning a farm. That changed when he married Erna Emma Frickenschmidt March 23, 1947, in Enid. In July of that year, they moved to a farm in Dewey County near Vici, Oklahoma, owned by her father as part of a program to help veterans become self-employed. A year later he enrolled in agricultural education classes, and by the time that year ended, he was committed. He and Erna settled into the community to raise a family and work together to make the farm productive, primarily growing wheat and raising beef cattle until retiring eight years ago.
To this union, five children were born: sons, Mark and Max; and daughters, Lavonne, LaDonna, and Penny.
Danny was preceded in death by his parents, Dan and Lena Smith; his wife of 62 years, Erna (Frickenschmidt) Smith; son, Max Smith, and two brothers-in-law. He is survived by son Mark Smith and wife Jane of Tulsa, Oklahoma; daughters, Lavonne Daniels and husband Chuck of Chico, Texas; LaDonna Kleuser of Mooreland, Oklahoma; and Penny Kleuser and husband Kenny of Mooreland, Oklahoma; son-in-law Bob Kleuser of Woodward Oklahoma; 5 sisters, Norma Hornbeek of Arlington, Texas; Beverly Belz and husband Jim of Tucson, Arizona; and Nola Noll, Joyce Becker and husband Arlo, and Carolyn Kellet, all of Enid, Oklahoma; 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Sunnyside Cemetery.
Graveside services will be at 3:00pm Saturday, August 25, 2012, at Sunnyside Cemetery.
