Delbert Sterling Vaughan was born July 5, 1925 near Harmon, Oklahoma to Rupy Young and Romaine (Smith) Vaughan. He passed from this life August 27, 2009, at the age of 84 in the Oklahoma Veterans Center, Clinton Oklahoma.
Delbert grew up in Ellis and Dewey counties and attended school at Lone Star and Vici. He enjoyed sports and played on the last Vici High School football team. He joined the United States Army in August 1944 and served his country proudly. Before his honorable discharge in August 1946, he earned the rank of Sergeant. Delbert spent many years as an active member of the American Legion.
Delbert married Evelynn Faye McDannald in Woodward, Oklahoma on August 4, 1945. This union was blessed with three children; Dennis, Andrea, and Todd. The family lived in Texas, Kansas, and Oklahoma. During these years he worked as a butcher, an oilfied derrick worker and for Oklahoma Publishing Company. Delbert and Evelynn owned and operated the Conoco Service Station in Leedey for over twenty years. After retirement, Delbert enjoyed raising rabbits and loved sharing them with all the children at Easter.
Delbert spent much of his time outdoors enjoying nature, cutting firewood, working in his yard, growing beautiful flowers and feeding the hummingbirds. He and his family have great memories of camping, trips throughout the United States, Old Mexico, and a special trip he and Evelynn took to Alaska. Homemade ice cream, OU Football and spending time with family were his favorites.
Delbert made a profession of faith and was baptized at the age of 21 in the pond by the South Canadian River at Camargo, Oklahoma. Delbert was an active member of the Leedey First Baptist Church as long as his health permitted.
Delbert was preceded in death by his parents, Rupy and Romaine Vaughan; sister, Jean Shaw; and brothers, Norman and Otis Clay Vaughan. He is survived by his loving wife of over 64 years, Evelynn of Leedey; two sons Dennis Vaughan and wife Nancy of Harmon, Oklahoma, and Todd Mac Vaughan and wife Kristina of Canute, Oklahoma; daughter Andrea Unruh and husband Harland of Weatherford, Oklahoma; grandchildren Julie Murlin and husband Stephen, Jennifer McCormick and husband Jason, Max Unruh, Tina, and Miranda Unruh; great-grandchildren Stacy and Madison Murlin, Baily and Glen McCormick; great great-grandchildren Daly and Kohl Martin; special little girls Regan Poole and Jayda Reynolds, nieces, nephews, other family and many dear friends.
