Donald Luther 'Don" Sutherland, son of George and Lena (Whitehurst) Sutherland Fields was born May 12, 1934 in Boise, ID. He was called to his heavenly home on January 20, 2021 at the age of 86 years, 8 months and 8 days. at Oklahoma City, OK. At the age of two he moved with his family to Gage, OK. where he attended grade school and high school graduating in 1953.
January 30, 1955, Don enlisted in the United States Air Force. He received training and was first stationed at Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul, IL. On September 2, 1956 he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Ruth Juanita Appel at Cessna Park, IL. One son, Ricky Don blessed their home. Don's Air Force career included overseas service in Korea from 1958-1960. Returning stateside, he and his family lived in Amarillo, TX. and Rantoul, IL. before returning to Amarillo in 1962. Don attained the rank of Tech. Sergeant and was honorably discharged in 1963. He received numerous awards for outstanding service during his years of active duty. He specialized in radar 'weapon control' and was instrumental in the development of weather radar technology. He served in the Air Force reserves from 1971-1990, moving from Amarillo to Choctaw, OK. in 1972, where he was employed as a civilian at Tinker Air Force Base. He traveled extensively during his employment at Tinker and following his retirement, he and Ruth enjoyed many RV trips throughout the United States. His special interests and hobbies consisted of riding his motorcycle, boating, camping, fishing and any mechanical challenge.
Don was baptized at a young age and was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Shawnee, OK. He was a loving husband, Dad, grandfather and sibling that will be greatly missed.
He is preceded in death by his parents, George Sutherland and Lena Fields, his stepfather, Wilbur Fields, great granddaughter, Lindsey Thomas; his sister, Janet McCall, brother in laws, A.L. Sell and Lonnie Smith; two nephews, Aaron and Robbie Fields and a niece, Debbie Hunt.
His memory will be cherished by his beloved wife, Ruth Sutherland of their home in Choctaw, OK., his son and best friend, Ricky Sutherland and daughter in law, Virginia of Choctaw, OK., three sisters, Margaret Sell of Woodward, OK., Fern Smith of Ardmore, OK. and Betty Peaslee and husband Danny of Gage, OK.; two brothers, Dale Fields of Gage, OK. and Bill Fields and wife Belinda of Ardmore, OK., three grandchildren, six great grand's, four nieces, six nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
