Doris Mayola (Sutton) Hicks was born on March 11, 1935 to Roy and Hallie (Beal) Sutton in Arnett, OK. She went to be with her Lord on April 10, 2017 in Oklahoma City, OK at the age of 82 years and 30 days.
During her childhood, she and her family lived in the Ioland community until her dad purchased a farm. There were many fun childhood days spent on the hills and creeks of this farm playing with her best friend and niece Roberta, from riding horses to catching bumble bees with cuckle burr leaves to dissecting frogs and chasing pretend wild Indians.
She started her early school years at the one room schoolhouse in the Ioland community and when they moved to Arnett she attended school there until she graduated in 1953. In 1954 while she was working at the café in Arnett, she met a handsome rebel. On October 16, 1954, she married the handsome rebel, Kenneth Paul Hicks at Woodward, Ok and to this union two children were born, Rory Kent Hicks and Shane Deme.
Doris loved to garden and each year looked forward to the time when you could start planting. She was an avid canner and canned whatever items came out of the garden. Needless to say, there was never a shortage of pickles around our house.
She also loved to sew and sewed many Christmas dresses, costumes, and pajamas, not to mention costumes for her kid's rock group. She loved music.
Cooking was another favorite of Doris's. Sunday and holiday dinners were quite an event in the family, with all the aunts, moms, and grandmothers bringing favorite foods and new recipes for all to enjoy.
During her working years, she enjoyed working at Buckles store both when it was a grocery store and department store.
She also worked for the school cafeteria for many years, cooking for the kids always gave her a lot of joy.
Doris is preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Paul Hicks; her parents, Roy and Hallie Sutton; her brothers Lester and wife Ethel, and James and wife Betty; twin grandsons James and Justin; a nephew, Rodney Hicks; two brothers-in-law, Warren Hicks and wife Wanda and Glen Hicks; and a sister-in-law, Orieta.
She is survived by son Rory Hicks of the home, daughter Shane Eggleston and husband Ben of Higgins, TX; grandson, Bradley Eggleston of Higgins, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
