Obituary

Dorothy Marlene Grant of OKC passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on January 3, 2024.  Throughout much of her life she preferred to be called "Marlene".  Later in life, she embraced her legal name, Dorothy. Marlene was the oldest of two children born to John and Irene Logan on March 18,1937 near Rhea, OK.

While Marlene was still an infant, she contracted spinal meningitis causing her to have a high fever of 104 and above for several days.  Due to a blizzard, all the roads were blocked and there was no way to get her to the hospital. Her family did the best they could to control her high fever at home by periodically submerging her in ice water to cool her body. Her illness made her profoundly deaf, although her family was unaware until much later.

At 6 years old, Marlene began attending the Oklahoma School for the Deaf (OSD) in Sulphur, OK until graduating in 1957. Traveling from Rhea to Sulfur frequently was a great undertaking in the 1940's but the Logan family provided nurturing support so Marlene could receive the best education available in Oklahoma for deaf children.  Afterwards she attended the only deaf college in the world, Gallaudet University in Washington, DC.  During her career, Marlene adapted very well. She worked in the printing trade as a linotype operator for many years in addition to a career with the US Postal Service.

Marlene was a bold, strong, and determined achiever of success despite being deaf.  She never thought of her deafness as a disability.  She inspired success within others, both hearing and deaf.

In 1959, while attending an Oklahoma School for the Deaf (OSD) homecoming football game, Marlene met her future husband, George Grant. They married in August 1960.  Marlene and George were married for 40 years until George's death in 2000.  To this union two sons were born, Larry and Jerry.  She and George lived and worked in Illinois, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin.  She retired from the US Postal Service in 2007 and lived in Illinois until relocating to OKC in June 2016.

Marlene is survived by her two sons and their spouses, Larry and Heather Grant of Columbia, SC, and Jerry and Laurie Grant of Columbia, MO, her brother and his spouse, Bobby and Anita Logan of Taloga, OK, niece Kellie Acree of Edmond, OK, nephew Alan Logan of Oklahoma City, OK, four grandchildren and one great granddaughter.
