Obituary

Elsworth Lester Squires, longtime Taloga resident, died in his home on August 8, 2007. The son of Earl & Mable Squires, Elsworth was born on January 24, 1923 on the family farm near Lenora. Elsworth attended White Eagle School South of Lenora through 8th grade and graduated from Taloga High School. He was united in marriage on August 1, 1942 to his high school sweetheart, Naoma Gastineau at the Taloga Methodist parsonage.

Elsworth was an athletic youth, on a championship baseball team in high school. He also enjoyed playing golf and was successful in winning several golf tournaments. He was a faithful supporter of Taloga athletics, attending athletic events beginning when his daughter played basketball at Taloga. He enjoyed attending his grandchildren's athletics and FFA stock shows and continued attending Taloga High School athletic events through the years until his failing health.

He started farming at a young age with a team of horses on the family farm raising cotton. After marriage, he began farming. Elsworth and Naoma milked 26 cows to supplement their income. In addition to farming, he also was involved with custom harvesting, water well drilling, operating heavy equipment, building farm dams, and was an accomplished carpenter.

Although large in stature and gruff in nature at times, Elsworth had a tender heart towards children and animals. He loved his family very much and wanted them around him as much as possible. Telling others about his grandchildren and great grandchildren was a delight in his life.

Elsworth was preceded in death by his parents, Earl & Mable Squires, a sister, Pauline Nelson, two brothers, Everett Squires and Lonnie Squires, and a granddaughter, Vicky (Logan) Lynch.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Naoma Squires; daughter Iola Logan of Tonkawa; two grandchildren, Kellie Purdy & husband Brad of Tonkawa and Alan Logan of Oklahoma City, and two great grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother-in-law, Ray Gastineau and wife Dorothy of Buchanan Dam, Texas; by a grandson-in-law, Danny Lynch of Sapulpa, Oklahoma; many nieces, nephews, other family and a host of friends.
