Elvin Wayne Sweet a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother passed away peacefully on June 19, 2023, at the age of 91. He was surrounded by his loving family at Midtown Assisted Living in Midlothian, Texas. Elvin was born on December 28, 1931, in Woodward, Oklahoma, to Ralph and Iva (Lynes) Sweet. He was one of eight children and grew up on the family farm in Woodward County, where he shared many memorable moments with his siblings. Elvin received his education from the Vici Public School system and proudly graduated with the class of 1950.
In 1950, Elvin entered the U.S. Army, serving his country with honor and dedication. He attained the rank of Corporal and received the National Defense Service Medal for his commitment. Following his military service, Elvin returned to Oklahoma and, on July 26, 1957, he married the love of his life, Beverly Jeanne Bowers, at the First Methodist Church in Woodward. Together, they embarked on a beautiful journey filled with love, adventure, and cherished memories.
Elvin and Beverly resided in various places throughout their lives, making homes in Woodward, Oklahoma until 1970, Enid, Oklahoma from 1970 to 1971, and again from 1992 to 2011. They also spent some of their best years in Garber, Oklahoma, from 1971 to 1992. In 2011, they moved to Mansfield, Texas, where they enjoyed their sunset years near their children and grandchildren.
Elvin dedicated his professional life to OG&E, where he worked diligently until his retirement. He was admired by his colleagues for his strong work ethic and commitment to his responsibilities. Outside of work, Elvin actively participated in his community and was a member of various organizations. He was a proud member of the VFW and the Rotary Club. During his time in Garber, Oklahoma, he served as a dedicated member of the Volunteer Fire Department and supported "That Garber Band" as a band parent and bus driver for many years. Elvin was also a member of the Garber Christian Church, where he found solace and community.
In his leisure time, Elvin found joy in fishing and exploring nature. He possessed a deep appreciation for the outdoors and cherished the tranquility it brought to his life. One of the greatest joys he shared with Beverly was their love for travel. Together, they embarked on countless adventures, visiting all fifty states and creating memories that will be cherished for generations to come. They enjoyed 20 years as "Winter Texans" and shared adventures across the border and the Texas valley with their grandkids during their annual visits.
Elvin was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Iva Sweet, his beloved wife, Beverly Sweet, and their infant daughter, Susan Kay. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Charlotte Poage and Ruth Leaser, and three brothers, Arnold Sweet, Vernon Sweet, and Marion Sweet. Additionally, a granddaughter, Emily Bower, and other loved ones have gone before him, leaving behind cherished memories.
Elvin is survived by his daughters, Sherry Stewart and husband Paul of Maypearl, Texas, and Lori Bower and husband Dan of Venus, Texas. He leaves a legacy of love through his three grandsons, Brad and wife Sara of Plano, Texas, Kevin and wife Kylie of Fort Worth, Texas, and Brian and Amy of Palmer, Alaska. Elvin's great-grandson, Elijah Stewart of Plano, Texas, and honorary granddaughter, Amy Bruno of Wasilla, Alaska, will forever carry his memory in their hearts. He is also survived by his sisters, Lena Mae Regan of Woodward, Oklahoma, and Evelyn Baird of Stillwater, five nieces, three nephews, many relatives and friends.
