Lavona Ferne (Crowley) Pemberton, 78-year-old Leedey resident, passed from this life October 14, 2017, in Elk City, OK. She was born February 15,1939, to Tolbert and Mildred (Kirby) Crowley in Leedey, OK. She began her schooling years at Liberty Center and when it closed she transferred to Leedey School, graduating with the class of 1957. She enjoyed playing basketball and was a member of the 1955 State Championship Team. After graduation, she attended the Oklahoma City Hair and Beauty Academy with her sister Jimmae. Ferne and Tracy Craig were united in marriage and two sons were born to this union, Tracy Leo, Jr. and James "Skinny" Arthur. Ferne lived in Oklahoma City, OK, Roosevelt, UT, Rock Springs, WY, and Akron, CO, before settling back in Leedey in 1980. In 1985 she married James Pemberton and they enjoyed going dancing together. Ferne and her grandson, Davey, attended Leedey First Baptist Church. When Ferne's Aunt Hazel died, she became the main caretaker of her aunt Geneva. Ferne and James began helping Aunt Geneva care for the cattle and farming operations on the family farm west of town, enlisting the help of kids and grandkids occasionally.
Ferne was preceded in death by her parents Tolbert and Mildred Crowley, husband James, son Tracy Leo Craig, Jr., sisters Yvonne Fry and Jimmae Hines, and aunts Hazel and Geneva Kirby.
She is survived by her son Skinny Craig and wife Binnie of Elk City, OK; five grandchildren Stevie Carter and husband Adam, Bobby Craig, Davey Craig, Geena Craig and Jamie Craig; three great-grandchildren Addison, Logan and Kalvin; brother Bill Crowley and wife Pat; three nieces; one nephew; and a host of friends.
