Georgia LaVerne Mitchell, was born November 3, 1921 in Waynoka, Oklahoma to Lola Ann (Bolar) and Claran Clifton Cobb, and departed this life April 24, 2009 at Woodward, Oklahoma at the age of 87 years 5 months and 21 days. Georgia grew up on the family farm and attended a rural grade school close to the farm. Georgia graduated from Waynoka High School and then attended Northwestern Oklahoma State University and Oklahoma State University receiving a Bachelors Degree in December, 1945.
Georgia and J. Willis Mitchell were united in marriage on February 9, 1947, at Gage, Oklahoma in the Methodist Church. To this union five children were born: Karen, Patricia, Gary, Rebecca, and John.
Georgia and J. Willis made Arnett, Oklahoma their home. Georgia worked as Ellis County Home Demonstration Agent and also taught the fourth grade in 1947-48. She also taught Home Economics and History from 1970 to 1985. Throughout her life she was a member of the Gingham Gals Home Demonstration Club, Delta Kappa Gamma, Ellis County Retired Teachers and Newman Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She was honored and received many awards. She served as President of Delta Kappa Gamma and President of the Newman Hospital Auxiliary for several years and was recognized for over 20 years of Auxiliary service. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, and was a recipient of the United Methodist Women's Recognition Pin and also, served as Youth Leader. Her special interest and hobbies were sewing, hand embroidery, cooking and especially her grandchildren.
Georgia was preceded in death by her husband J. Willis Mitchell, parents, Claran and Lola Cobb, brothers, Claran Cobb, Jr., and Estel Cobb, and a nephew, Michael Cobb.
Georgia leaves as survivors: her daughters, Karen Sue Miller and husband Steve, of Arnett, Oklahoma, Patricia Laverne Trent and husband, Luther of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Rebecca Anne Greer and husband Doug, of Hays, Kansas; her sons Gary Willis Mitchell and wife Vera, of Shattuck, Oklahoma, and John Martin Mitchell and wife Karen, of Arnett, Oklahoma. Her grandsons: Brett Miller, Matthew Miller and Andrew Miller; and her granddaughters: Kimberly Mitchell, Sarah Cook, Megan Greer, Ashley Greer, Jena Mitchell and Janel Mitchell. She also leaves six great grandchildren, five nieces and four nephews; brother-in-law, J. Earl Mitchell and wife Lavina of Arnett, Oklahoma; sisters-in-law, Hilda Cobb of Silver Springs, Maryland and Margaret Cobb of Silver City, New Mexico; other family and a host of friends.
Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church in Arnett, Oklahoma or to the Newman Memorial Hospital Building Fund, Shattuck, Oklahoma.
