Glessnell Lucille (Hurst) Smith was born February 26, 1916 west of Ft. Supply, OK to John Loren and Rachel Lizzie (Brant) Hurst and passed from this life on December 26, 2015. Glessnell was reared mainly in the Ft. Supply area except for a time when she moved with her family to Mesa, Arizona and attended school there. Schools in the Ft. Supply area she attended were Hudson Valley, Dunlap, Ft. Supply and Woodward High School.
Glessnell was united in marriage to Vern Smith of Vici, OK on January 20, 1934 in the judge's chamber in Woodward, OK. It was a double ceremony with Glessnell's sister, Violet, and Vern's brother, Wesley, being the other couple. Vern and Glessnell made their home in the Vici community for their entire 60 years of marriage. They farmed and ran a dairy together. They raised and sold registered Brown Swiss dairy cattle. When they built their country home, they made the bricks for the outside of the house.
Glessnell was baptized and was an active member of the Vici First United Methodist Church. She helped with the women's group and the dinners held in the church. She brought many homemade Angel Food cakes that were a favorite.
Glessnell was blessed with many musical talents. She played the organ, piano, and the guitar. She was a gifted seamstress winning many blue ribbons at the state fair with her sewing ability. She created outstanding draperies for her home, other family members' homes, and for a number of years she had a drapery business. For a time, she also made ceramics for her home, family, and friends.
Glessnell was a bookkeeper at the Vici Coop for a number of years. Later she was bookkeeper at the Vici Nursing Home. She was twice a cancer survivor, once in the 1980's and the other time in 2000. Glessnell participated in the Vici Senior Citizen's Center. She helped with the floral arrangements made each year as a money making project for the group. For her 90th birthday party, she wanted to make homemade Angel Food cakes. "From Scratch" she made seventeen Angel Food Cakes. People provided freezer space as she progressed. She had great-nieces who helped her with the icing. She insisted she would be the one to cut each cake into seventeen slices. The party was held at the Vici Senior Citizens on her actual birth date, February 26, 2006. A crowd of a least 125 were present.
Glessnell is survived by daughter, Twanda Marie Page of Weatherford, OK; two grandchildren, Charles Stan Page of Weatherford, OK and LeAnn Ellis and husband Hal of Stillwater, OK; two great-granddaughters Allison Page Drummond of Oklahoma City, OK and Christian Caroline Drummond of Stillwater, OK; and a host of nieces and nephews plus many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Vern in 1994, son-in-law Dr. Charles (Chuck) Page; two brothers Cash and J.L. Hurst; five sisters Hazel Pound, Violet Smith, Glendena Freed, Barbara Lee Tharp, and Vernell Vaughn.
With the help of her next door neighbors great-niece Wathena Walton and Wathena's daughter, Glessnell was able to live in her own home until she was almost 97 years old. Glessnell entered the Vici Nursing Home in December of 2012. She then moved to the Corn Heritage Village of Weatherford in April, 2013 to be closer to her daughter. The family would like to thank the Shepherd Hospice for their help with our dear mother.
