Obituary

Harlan Lee Appel, son of John L. and Frances M. (Black) Appel was born October 5, 1944.  He passed from this life in Bossier City, LA. on October 18, 2022 at the age of 78 years and 13 days.  Harlan was born and raised on his family's farm in the Bishop community of Ellis County OK.  He attended the Bishop rural school and completed his school years in Arnett, OK. graduating with the class of 1962 from Arnett High School.  On November 16, 1963 in the Arnett Methodist Church Harlan was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, LeEtta Ashpaugh.  Their life together spanned nearly 59 years and they were blessed with two sons, Dustin Lee and Harlan Cody.  Harlan served in the Oklahoma National Guard beginning in 1965 and was honorably discharged in 1971 attaining the rank of Sergeant.  Harlan and LeEtta's first home was in Oklahoma City, OK, followed by moves to Beaver, OK, Paris, Athens and Vernon, TX.  Their permanent home was established in Shreveport, LA. in 1993.  Harlan's life on the farm during his youth served him well as he was a cattleman and partner in a company selling commercial livestock feed ingredients until his retirement due to failing health.  His special interests included fishing, traveling and RV excursions.  He enjoyed boating and was a member of the Shreveport Power Squadron Boating Club.  He and his wife LeEtta traversed virtually every major river east of the Mississippi, including trips as far south as the Florida Keys and as far north as Canada, in their boat the "Two-to-Go" with their beloved dog Greta (and later Jimbo) at their side.  He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, a friend to many and will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his beloved wife LeEtta Appel of Shreveport, LA., his sons Dustin Appel of Houston, TX. and Cody Appel and his wife Kacey of Shreveport, LA. Three grandchildren, Emery Appel of Houston, TX. and Boland Appel and Hannah Whittington both of Shreveport, LA.  His brother Waylen Appel of Woodward, OK., his nephew Bryan Appel of Shattuck, OK., his niece Susan Appel of Amarillo, TX., other relatives and many friends.

Harlan is preceded in death by his parents John L. and Frances M. Appel and other loved ones.
