Obituary

Janet Yvonne Grantham Schroeder was born January 18, 1938 in Shattuck, Oklahoma, to Frank R. and Sylva Woods Grantham. She stepped into the arms of Christ on August 7, 2014. Other than the years that she spent away at Stillwater, where she furthered her education, Janet was a lifelong resident of Gage. In 1947, the family home southeast of Gage was destroyed by the April 9 tornado, but Janet and her parents survived. With the help of family and friends, they rebuilt on the same location. On September 25, 1949, Janet was baptized at the Gage Christian Church, along with her Grandmother Oleta Grantham. She graduated from Gage High School with the class of 1956. In 1960, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Oklahoma State University. She went on to earn her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) in 1962. That was a big year for her. She married Joseph Lee Schroeder on June 30. When her parents moved to Texas that year, Janet and Joe took over the dairy and farm, and established the veterinary clinic at the farm. Janet was the first woman in Oklahoma to earn her DVM.

She participated for many years in the Home Extension Club, and for over 40 years, she worked with the Gage and Ellis County 4-H groups. She was an active member of the Gage Christian Church, where she served as a deacon, sang in the choir, and even participated in a melodrama at an anniversary celebration of the church.

She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her five sons: Rex and wife Linda of Gage, Oklahoma, Eddie and wife Lorraine of Roll, Oklahoma, Tony and wife Shelly of Gage, Oklahoma, Fred and wife Rhonda of Stillwater, Oklahoma, and Wayne and wife Michelle of Christiana, Tennessee; Nineteen grandchildren: Claydon Hutson, Lacy Burns, Cheyenne Wear, Renda Schroeder, Katrina Schroeder, Killian Schroeder, Sabina Barto, Yancey Schroeder, Michael Schroeder, Tyler Schroeder, Clayton Schroeder, Valerie Schroeder, Libby Schroeder, Zade Schroeder, Brandon, Cole, Montana, Belle and Shae Dailey; great grandchildren: C.D. and Danny Hutson, Emelia, Eli and Ethan Burns, and Keelie and Lexie Schroeder; many relatives and friends will greatly miss her.

Memorial gifts may be given to the Gage 4-H Club, C/O Oklahoma State Bank in Gage, Oklahoma.
