Obituary

Janis Kay Shaw was born Jan 29,1947, at Shattuck Hospital.  Janis was taken home to Edgar and Jeans ranch 6 miles west of Vici, where they had built a new 540 square foot hand pour concrete block house after Edgar returned from WWII. Janis subsequently had two brothers, the first Jerald, 18 months younger and just the right age for siblings to fight, and then Roger, 6 years younger, who Janis' thought was just for her to play mother too.

The family grew up in the Vici Nazarene church, where the whole family sang and performed together at local weddings and funerals. While still in school, Janis became the church pianist, and organist. Janis graduated high school in 1965 and went on to Bethany Nazarene College. Unfortunately, in the first year Janis was in a car accident that required her to come home for convalescence. Janis remained at home for 2 or 3 years, during which time she held various jobs, including one at the Gibson store in Woodward and at KSIW radio station. In about 1968 Janis moved on to Oklahoma City for better jobs and bought herself a new 1969 red and white Firebird.  She also purchased a small mobile home to live in. While in Oklahoma City, the death of an Uncle brought her into contact with the family of a nephew, Bob Watts. Bob's family had two young children and Janis frequently babysat them and they included her in many family activities. Bob was an FAA controller at Oklahoma City Airport.

In 1970, just before Christmas, a young man transferred from Fort Worth Meacham Airport to Oklahoma City Airport. At work, Mr. Watts would talk about this young lady he knew, and at home he would talk about the new controller at work, promising both he would introduce them. When it had not happened after 5 or 6 weeks, on a Friday afternoon the young man asked Bob for her phone number and called her himself. Being wary about a blind date with someone's relative, he suggested they should go out to eat after work, with a plan that if he didn't like her, it would be McDonalds, and home. Upon meeting her, he took her to the fanciest restaurant he knew of. Just under two years later, on November 25,1972, at the Vici Nazarene Church, Janis became Mrs. Janis Melius.

Byron and Janis started out marriage with an immediate transfer to be part of the initial staffing for DFW Airport that would not open until January 1974. Because of this transfer, they were not able to honeymoon until January, when they went to Minnesota to see where he grew up.

Janis held several different jobs in the Dallas Fort Worth area, until finally becoming a legal secretary for Jerry John Crawford in Lewisville, TX, where Janis and her husband had purchased their first home. It became apparent that her husband's career would involve moving, and Janis said she would follow him anywhere. The anywhere began in 1978, with Anchorage Alaska, and a new home on the mountainside. She continued as a Legal Secretary there, for a firm of three attorneys.

The couple returned to the (lower 48), to Oklahoma City, in September 1980. They bought a new house in Oklahoma City, and Janis spent the winter decorating it, while already several months pregnant. On March 6, 1981, her daughter Mikenzie Dawson was born. With that, Janis devoted her life to home and family, of which there were several. There were 2 years in Oklahoma City, 6 years in Fort Worth, TX, 4 years in Baton Rouge, LA., 4 years in Little Rock, AR., and finally 26 years in Colleyville, TX.

In 1989, Janis enthusiastically welcomed Byron's older daughter Kristina Elizabeth to the family, and Kristi made several moves with them. Janis subsequently enjoyed helping plan Kristi's wedding to son in law Dave Ragsdill, March 23, 2002, and helping plan Mikenzie's wedding to son in law Kory Oldham, June 13, 2009.

Another big excitement for Janis was the birth on June 14, 2012, of her grandsons, Kase Oldham and Kingston Oldham. Janis enthusiastically provided day care for 4 years.

As Mikenzie became older, Janis had time to enjoy one of her other passions, home decorating. She had already practiced in multiple homes. She decorated several apartments, and then homes for each daughter, but also cousins, nephews, and friends. She was not a casual decorator but would often live with you for a couple of weeks as it was being accomplished.

In November 2021, Janis moved to her final home, Woodward, OK., to be close to her Grandsons, Kase Oldham, and Kingston Oldham. She excitedly watched them win their tackle football game on Tuesday Oct 17. The previous Saturday, she had her husband hang some pictures. She was not done.

On October 20, 2023 she passed peacefully from this life.  She leaves behind many cherished moments and memories for her beloved husband, Byron Melius of Woodward, OK., her daughters Kristi Ragsdill and her husband Dave of Godley, TX. and Mikenzie Oldham and her husband Kory of Vici, OK. and her precious grandchildren Kase and Kingston Oldham. Her brothers, Jerald Shaw and his wife Karen of Vici, OK. and Roger Shaw and his wife Conita of Harmon, OK., her special nieces and nephews, cousins, other loved ones and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents Edgar and Jean Shaw, a baby brother Robert Shaw and other loved ones.
