Obituary

Wilma Jean Freeman was born September 1,1930 in the rural area near Paris, Arkansas to L.L. and Vera Mae Horne.  She passed from this life February 23, 2024, at the age of 93 years, 5 months and 22 days.  Wilma Jean Horne attended school her first ten years at New Blaine, Arkansas.  At the age of ten her parents moved to western Oklahoma where she attended school at Ocina, a rural school near Willow, Oklahoma, graduating there in 1948.  She then attended college at Southwestern State College in Weatherford, Oklahoma finishing in 1955.  She applied for the 5th grade teaching job at Arnett, Oklahoma, one year teaching 5th grade, next year moving down to 4th grade and remained in that position for 28 years.  She completed her master's degree while teaching.  She met her future husband at Arnett, they married July 1, 1956.  Frank was drafted into the Army in 1956 and was sent to Fort Meade, Maryland.  Jean resigned her teaching position and moved to Laurel, Maryland, living there for two years as Frank completed his Army duty.  A son, Tracy Lee Freeman was born September 30, 1957, at Fort Meade hospital.  Completing his two years of duty, Frank returned to Arnett with his wife and son where he resumed his truck driving and Jean went back to teaching.  She retired from teaching in 1986 and assumed the roll of stay at home Mom, taking care of family and enjoying the benefits of being at home.  Of course, she did some substitute teaching now and then.  She was also a member of the Pink Ladies organization at the Newman Hospital in Shattuck, OK. for several years.  She loved taking care of her family and taking care of gardening, keeping her place "pretty and green".  Jean lost her beloved husband in 2002, but kept her place going.  Her son completed his high school graduation and followed his Dad into trucking.  He married Kay Hohweiler who had two boys, Danny Tapia and Jerry Tapia, a third son, Nick was born May 29, 1987, who joined his Dad in the trucking world.  She was blessed with three grandsons, three granddaughters- in- law and four greats.  Danny and Kelly Tapia and their daughter Kyrie of Woodward, OK., Jerry and Amber Tapia and their three children Jake, Aubrey and Jace; and Nick and Brandi Freeman, all living at Fargo, OK., it was good to have them close by.  Her sister, Betty Peck of Edmond, OK. and her four children Mark and Lyn Patton, their two children Max and Leigh and Chuck and Ronalda and their two children Stephen and Taylor; Donna and Kevin and their two children Lance and Davis; David and Karla and their two children Grant and Caroline.  She is also survived by a host of former students whose lives she touched.  Jean is preceded in death by her parents L.L. and Vera Horne, her beloved husband Frank Freeman and other loved ones.
