Obituary

Jimmy Lee Kauk was born at home on the farm southeast of Leedey, Oklahoma on February 24, 1939, to Herbert Leon and Doris (Steiger) Kauk. He passed from this life on October 20, 2021.

Jimmy attended Prairie Star School for eight years and then graduated Leedey High School in 1956. He married his high school sweetheart LaVonne Harrison on August 23, 1957 at Leedey First Baptist Church. They were blessed with three children: Paula Renee, David Leon, and Brian Jackson.

Jimmy and LaVonne made their home in several different Oklahoma towns while he was working in road construction for 12 years. He then worked at a copper mine for Eagle Picher Industries for five years and the family lived in Olustee, Oklahoma. He then worked in the coal mines of eastern Oklahoma for five years, eventually retiring after 20 years from the Oklahoma State Department of Mines as a mine inspector in western Oklahoma while living in Vici and Leedey.

Jimmy was a talented musician who sang and played piano, guitar, and other stringed instruments. In his early years he and his band, which included his sister Marilyn, played a three-month regular gig on a local television station out of Elk City, as well as many local events, fairs, and festivals, and living room jam sessions with his friends and family. He enjoyed working on old cars and tractors and going to auctions with his brother Larry Kauk and friend Dob Basler. After attending one county auction, he brought home a rusty 1950's fire truck, which he proudly gave to his wife for their anniversary. After retiring, he and LaVonne enjoyed exploring the Colorado mountains in the summer and the Arizona trails in the winter. He made friends wherever he went and never met a stranger. He loved a good laugh.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Herbert Leon Kauk and Doris Arleta Steiger Kauk, and brother Larry Duane Kauk. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, LaVonne Kauk of the home, daughter Paula Renee Kauk Hiseley and spouse Pete of Muskogee, son David Leon Kauk and special friend Deena Kusler of Welling, OK, and son Brian Jackson Kauk and spouse Caryon from Des Moines, Iowa. There are eight grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren and one extraordinary aunt, Bernice Carter, two sisters, Marilyn Joyce Thurman of Gotebo and Linda Carol Johnson of Cordell, and one brother Randall Lynn Kauk of Cordell, as well as a multitude of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, the Leedey EMS, or a charity of your choice.
