John Richard Carey was born on June 11, 1943 at Grand, Oklahoma, the fourth son of James Rufus and Mary Olive Carey. Growing up on the hill above Grand provided many fond memories. John graduated from Arnett High School in 1961. He then had various farming and ranching jobs. He was drafted into the military in April 1965 and served a term of duty in Viet Nam.
After his return home he worked on pipelines and again as a farming and ranch hand. He married Christine Hahn on February 3, 1970 in Clovis, New Mexico. They have one daughter Sheila Rhea.
In March 1970 he went to work for the Ellis County Sheriff's Office as Under Sheriff. He then became Sheriff and served in that capacity for 8 years. In 1981, John went to work for Texaco Trading & Transportation in Shattuck, Oklahoma. He was sent to Dumas, Texas as District Manager to establish a new District office and in 1984 he was transferred to Midwest City, Oklahoma. In 1990 he transferred to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he retired. After Texaco, he worked for AJL Enterprises in Baton Rouge until his health failed. He and Christine returned to Oklahoma in 2005, first living in Mustang, Oklahoma, and then moving back to Arnett. John was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Arnett. John died on April 19, 2015 in Shattuck, OK at the age of 71 years.
He is survived by his wife Christine, daughter Sheila and her husband E R Gammill of Rogersville, Missouri, and granddaughters Payton & Megan. One grandson Brandon Alexander and wife Chris-Tina of Noble, Oklahoma, and great grandson, Gunner, and brother Kenneth Carey of Phoenix, Arizona.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, James Rufus and Mary Olive Carey, brothers Thomas and Robert, sister-in-law, Delores Carey and niece Robyn Holms.
