Leland Farrel Hunter

September 30, 1931 — January 16, 2026

Harmon

Leland Farrel Hunter was born September 30, 1931, in Lenora, Oklahoma, one of thirteen children born to Clarence Elmer and Alice Bell (Whitehead) Hunter. His early years were spent on the family farm, where he learned the values of hard work and responsibility. He attended Kizer School near Cestos, Oklahoma, and later completed his formal education through the eighth grade at Pleasant Valley School near Harmon, Oklahoma.

On January 13, 1951, Leland was united in marriage to the love of his life, Nancy Joann Huen in Woodward, Oklahoma. Their marriage was a devoted partnership that endured for more than seventy-four years, as they faithfully navigated life’s challenges side by side. Their home in the Harmon community was blessed with three children: Sherry, Jerry, and Don.

Leland was a farmer and rancher and a dedicated steward of the land. Along with the help of his “right-hand man,” Nancy, they taught their children the value of a strong work ethic. Their dedication and conservation practices earned them the Excellence in Grazing Award from the Society of Range Management and the Bankers Award from the Woodward County Soil Conservation District. Leland was a member of the American Farmers Movement and proudly served his community as Fire Chief for the Harmon Fire Department.

With a steadfast heart and a great sense of humor, Leland deeply loved his family. He enjoyed attending baseball and basketball games, stock shows, and traveling to numerous rodeos. Quail and deer hunting created many cherished memories and he had a special fondness for his special four-legged companions—his cow dog Bill, bird dogs Sadie and Spot, and greyhounds Blue and Frosty—with whom he spent countless hours hunting coyotes. He also had a deep appreciation for classic cars and rarely passed up the chance to take a turn around the dance floor to a good waltz tune.

Leland completed his earthly journey on January 16, 2026, at the age of 94—just two months following the loss of his beloved wife, Nancy, and three days after what would have been their 75th wedding anniversary. Together Again.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Hunter; his parents, Clarence and Alice Hunter; his sisters, Helen Hunter, Irene Bentley, Iva Lee Karnes, and Doris Adams; his brothers, Bob Hunter, Cy Hunter, Leo Hunter, Tommy Hunter, Merritt Hunter, Gene Hunter and Darrell Hunter; his in laws, J.E. “Bud” and Estella Huen; daughter-in-law Cynthia Lee Hunter; and numerous other loved ones.
