Obituary

Lenton Gill Craven, son of Joseph William Craven and Esther Love Pippin Craven, was born in Lawrence, Mississippi on December 9, 1919. L.G. passed from this life on September 21, 2011 at Woodward, Oklahoma.

L.G. spent his early life on the farm at Lawrence, Mississippi. He received his education in the schools of Lawrence, Twin Lake Schools of Tampa, Florida and Newton, Mississippi High School.

On April 8, 1942 L.G. entered the military and served in the United States Army until receiving his honorable discharge on November 20, 1945. At the time of his discharge, L.G. held the rank of Sergeant. His tour of service included eleven months in Reykjavik, Iceland preparing for conflict in northern France, central Europe, and Rhineland, Germany. For L.G.'s dedication to his country, we honor and love him.

On July 7, 1943, while on furlough, Lenton G. Craven was united in marriage to Velma Faye Woods in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Three weeks later, L.G. returned to war to serve another two and a half years.

After spending his second honeymoon in Tampa, Florida during the winter of 1946, he returned to Lawton, Oklahoma to a farm four miles north of town. While living on the farm, sons Lyndon and Mike were born.

In March of 1948, L.G. and Faye bought Shaffer's Grocery Store in Arnett, Oklahoma from Jack and Pop Shaffer. In September of that same year, son Pat was born.

During his life, L.G. served in many capacities—town manager in charge of all city functions, American Legion Commander and other Legion offices. L.G. retired as Fire Chief after serving the Arnett community for 20 years. He also served as president of the local Kiwanis Club and was a community leader and worker.

L.G.'s special interests were hunting, fishing, boating and skiing. However, L.G.'s greatest love was dealing in antique cars.

L.G. was preceded in death by his beloved wife Velma Faye (Shorty) to all who knew her, son, Pat Craven who was killed in Korea in July of 1976, parents, Joe and Esther Craven, brothers, Almon and Lemuel Craven, sisters, Irene Womack, Zora Balesta and Barbara Womack, niece, Zell Mason.

Those left to cherish his memory are his sons, Lyndon Craven of Miami, Texas and Mike Craven and wife Debbie of Midwest City, Oklahoma; grandsons, Alan, Jeffrey, Patrick and Jacob Craven; granddaughters, Candy Adams and Effie Craven; great grandchildren, Rebecca Lynn Craven, Kailynn Jade and Zachary Jaden Craven, Dustin Dunn and Cade Cooper, nephew, Skip Craven, niece, Betty Harris, other relatives and many, many friends. L.G. will also be remembered by the many contacts throughout the U.S. through his antique car tours and activities.

Memorials can be made in L.G.'s honor to the Veteran's of Foreign Wars or the local American Legion Post.
