Lloyd Grant and Bernice Gertrude Hall Brown welcomed their first child on Lloyd's thirty- second birthday, July 5, 1928. The brown eyed baby girl was born on the family ranch south of Turpin, OK in Beaver County. They named their daughter Lova Jo and called her "Jo" or by her nickname "Dodie". Jo was joined a few years later by a brother "Barr".
Jo had many stories of living through the dust bowl days. In her early years she became a member of the Methodist Church in Turpin. All twelve of her school years were spent in the school at Turpin. She graduated in 1950, from Northwestern State University, Alva Ok.
In December of that year she married Lex Barnes of Shattuck, OK. They made their home in Mississippi, South Carolina and Texas, while Lex was in the Air Force. After the couple moved to Shattuck, OK they had two sons, Monte Gene in 1952 and Johnny Craig in 1955. The family later moved to Follett TX where they operated a propane business, before moving to a home located between the towns of Gage and Shattuck.
In 1969 Jo moved to the town of Gage and began working for Newman Memorial Hospital in Shattuck.
She began her 20 year career at the Shattuck Police Department as Dispatcher in 1977, and then moved to Shattuck in 1980. Returning to Gage in 1995, she purchased the home where she lived until her passing on April 17, 2012.
Jo is preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd and Gertrude Brown, her brother, Lloyd "Barr" Brown and nephew Danny Brown, all of Turpin.
Family members left behind to cherish her memory are sons Monte and wife Sally of Gage, OK and Johnny and wife, Beverly of Tulsa, OK; grandsons, Gentry and wife Lauren of Mustang, OK Jeremy of Gage, Jarred and wife Anna of Woodward, and John Barnes of Springfield, MO; granddaughter, Jamie Jo Summerall and husband Sean of Gage and granddaughter in-law Stephanie Barnes. Jo's eight great grandchildren are Taylor Paige Barnes of Mustang, OK; Grayson, Traylen and Braylee Barnes of Mustang,OK; Chloe and Kaelton Barnes of Woodward, OK; Emily Jo Brown and Zoey Summerall of Gage, OK; nephews Rick Brown and wife Bonnie, Jim Brown and sister-in-law Mary Brown along with other great nieces and nephew in the Turpin, OK area and a host of friends.
