"Skeet" Schamburg was called to his heavenly home on Friday, July 18, 2014, after suffering injuries in a traffic accident.
Loyd Franklin (Skeez) Schamburg was born on February 28, 1933, on a farm east of Vici to Fred and Orpha (Dickey) Schamburg. Growing up on the farm, he rode horses, played along the creek and learned about the world from the adults around him. At 15, he began to work for Frank Burns doing farm work. Basketball was his favorite sport and he was on the Vici team that went to the State Tournament in 1951. After graduating from Vici High School with the class of 1951, Skeet enrolled in college at Oklahoma A & M in Stillwater, OK. After a year, Skeet decided to try his hand at working with a seismograph crew. A young lady working in the Holland Drug Store caught his eye. Skeet and Arlene Ruth Forrest were married in Woodward at the First Christian Church on June 13, 1953. Returning to Stillwater to finish his college degree, Skeet and Arlene settled into married life, making life-long friends. Upon graduation, they moved around western Oklahoma and western Texas working on seismograph crews, finally settling in Seagraves, TX; but their heart was always in Vici, so when the opportunity arose to purchase land north of Vici, they took a chance. Three children were born to them, Sherri Lynn in 1956, Freddie Jay in 1959, and Monte Lee in 1961. All three were raised on this "bunch of sand hills" and graduated from Vici High School.
Cattle was a big part of Skeet's life. He got enjoyment by working with cattle and his judgment was valued when, from time-to-time, he would be an order/buyer for area farmers and cattlemen who were looking for a few calves, cow/calf pairs, or seasonal pasture needs. He was a member of the Vici Rodeo Club and many Saturday nights were spent roping calves. Skeet also enjoyed simply observing cattle grazing and watching the many humorous antics of calves at play.
In 1967, Skeet was afforded the opportunity to teach school. He traveled daily to attend summer school at Southwestern State College in Weatherford, OK. Upon getting his teaching certificate, he taught science classes at Vici High School for three years. He loved teaching his students, but loved ranching more and decided to go back to ranching full time.
April 1977 Skeet was baptized and became a member of the First Christian Church of Vici.
In January 2004, the love of his life, Arlene, passed away. A few years later, a tornado destroyed the improvements of the "home place" that they had made. Although not a "town person", there was little choice, but to move into Vici proper, where he has resided since that time.
Skeet was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 50 years, Arlene, his parents, Fred and Orpha Schamburg, and his brother J D Schamburg.
He is survived by his daughter Sherri Mayes and husband Kelly of Chesapeake, VA; sons Fred Schamburg and wife Kelly Sue, and Monte Schamburg, both of Weatherford, OK. Skeet was blessed with two granddaughters Stacey and husband John, and Corey and husband Josh; three grandsons Logan, Grant, and Austin; four great-grandchildren Hannah Ruth, Besorah, Mithkah and Luke; sister Anna Mae Sweet of Woodward, OK; and several nieces and nephews.
