Obituary

Albert Lynn Spake, always known as Lynn, was the oldest son of Cordy G. Spake and Agnes L. (Parry) Spake Humberd.  He was born near Cestos, OK on August 11, 1923 and passed from this life at Woodward, OK on September 23, 2020 at the age of 97 years, 1 month and 12 days.

Lynn grew up on the family farm and attended grade school and high school at Mutual and Vici.  In July of 1943 he received his draft notice to serve in the Armed Forces and honorably served his country during WWII.  As a member of the Army Air Corps., Lynn received basic training at Amarillo, TX and Gunnery training at Laredo, TX.  It was his first time to fly in an airplane.  From Laredo he was sent to March Field, CA where he and nine other young men were assigned to a B-24 Bomber overseas training course.  They joined a B-24 Squadron in India, flying 33 bombing missions, one of which required them to parachute to safety when their plane was out of fuel.  He returned to Norfolk, VA by boat, and was home on furlough when WWII came to an end.  Lynn was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with Two Oak Leaf Clusters along with other ribbons and citations.  He received his honorable discharge on November 5, 1945 and had attained the rank of Staff Sergeant.

Lynn eloped with a pretty young lady from Taloga, OK, Mary Ann Willis.  They were married at Canadian, TX in January of 1946.  They established farm life near Cestos, OK and at Camp Creek after the births of daughter, Judy Ann and son, Albert Lynn, Jr.  The family resided four years in Wichita, KS where Lynn was employed at Boeing Aircraft.  Returning to Vici, OK, Lynn resumed his love of raising cattle and growing wheat and did so until retirement.   He supported the Vici Coop for many years. Occasionally he worked other jobs while farming.  He also served as a right of way agent (doodlebug) for seismographic activity.

Lynn undertook hobbies of playing guitar with his brothers Rex and Francis and "the Browns" who played at local venues and nursing homes.  He enjoyed vegetable gardening for several years.  He and Mary Ann installed elaborate Christmas decorations in their front yard.    For many years, town residents praised their displays.  Lynn always enjoyed having a cup of coffee and took time for a game of cards (pitch).  He enjoyed reading western novels often while he and Mary Ann relaxed in their camper trailer at Canton Lake.

Lynn was baptized and became a faithful member of the Vici Christian Church, in 2005.  His belief in God sustained him throughout succeeding years.

Lynn is preceded in death by his father, Cordy Spake and his wife, Octie, his mother, Agnes Humberd and her husband, Paul.  His devoted wife, Mary Ann, and siblings Lucille, Rex, Francis and Cecil.

Survivors include his daughter Judy Turner of Houston, TX, and his son Albert Spake, Jr. of Vici, OK. His sister, Rita Hunter of Woodward, OK, several nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Special gratitude goes to Mary Willis and Carol Schwake for the many cards sent to Lynn the past few years.  Also to Marilyn Reed, her daughter Misty Reed and grandchildren Adriana, Cheyenne and Conner for their attention to and caring for Lynn while he was at Grace Living Center.
