Margaret Ruth Smith Pickering was born February 7, 1928 south of Vici, Oklahoma. She was the 7th child of 12 children born to Virgil Alva and Ines Rose Davis Smith and passed from this life on March 5, 2009 in Vici, OK. Margaret attended Vici Schools till the 11th grade. She married Hill E. Pickering on August 20, 1943 at Sharon, Oklahoma. To this union 4 children were born; Marion Eugene "Chuck", Gary Edward, Brenda Kay and Jerry Ann. Margaret lived in the Camp Creek area until June, 2007 when she moved to the Vici Nursing Home due to declining health.
Hill and Margaret farmed and raised cattle. Margaret was well known for her Cinnamon Rolls, fresh dressed chickens, a big garden, and helping on the farm. Margaret cooked for the hired hands that worked on the farm for her husband Hill and later, her son Chuck. Margaret enjoyed crocheting to pass the time while waiting in hospitals, at school for the kids, and on winter evenings watching T.V. Mom was known to have a supply of Baby Afghans, in all colors, on hand to give at showers. She made doilies and tablecloths also. Margaret served on the Election Board for several years. Mom enjoyed being outdoors. She loved milking cows, raising quail, goats, and bottle calves. In fact, Mom enjoyed milking cows so much as a kid, if anyone milked or cows, she laid down in the floor kicking and crying. In her younger years, mom and dad enjoyed riding horses. Margaret and her friend Donna would put on various costumes and entertain in the nursing home and attended different senior citizen parties and dances.
In 2004 she had a stroke that slowed her down a bit. Margaret loved to go to country western dances and attended the Western Opry at Vici after it started.
