Obituary

Margreta "Greta" Johnson Kraft was born July 16, 1928 south of Gage, OK. in Ellis County, she was one of six children born to John T. and Mary Nightengale Johnson.  She gained her angel wings at the age of 92 on May 18, 2021 at Shattuck, OK.  Greta attended grade school and high school at Gage Public Schools and played basketball for the Gage Tigers.  She may have been small but that did not keep the coach from playing her against the tallest member of the opposing team.

On January 21, 1946, Greta was united in marriage to Henry "Hank" Kraft in Woodward, OK.  They made their home in Shattuck, OK. and were blessed with six children, Van, Merle, Becky, Jolene, Rex and Scott.  A hard worker who liked to keep busy, Greta was a homemaker, wife and mother and owned and operated the Kraft Laundry for over 40 years.  She did laundry for private individuals as well as the hospital and nursing home.  She spent many nights starching and ironing shirts after spending all day in the laundry. She was also an accomplished seamstress. Greta enjoyed cooking and there was always a pie, cake or other dessert in her kitchen.  She was well known for her specialties, such as numerous German dishes and Angel Food cake.

Greta was baptized in 2011 and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Shattuck.  Her thoughtfulness, kindness and generosity was well known to her family and the community.

She was an avid sports fan and when her children were too young to play ball, she and Hank spent many nights on the road going to the games of nieces and nephews.  The support of the home team and traveling to ball games continued with their own children.

When Greta was 46 years old a family member submitted her name to the Daily Oklahoman Newspaper and a reporter came to Shattuck and interviewed her for the paper.  Greta was described as "a women's libber but as old fashioned as a feather pillow and an exceptional woman."  Ask any family member and they will tell you she was definitely an extraordinary woman, wife, mother and friend.

She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Mary Johnson, her beloved husband, Hank Kraft, her son Scott Kraft and two grandchildren.  Three sisters, Tillie Middleton, Hazel Steffens and Lorene Kraft and her brother, Walter Johnson.

Her memory will be cherished by her children, Van Kraft and wife Carolyn of Shattuck, OK., Merle Kraft of Harlingen, TX., Becky McQuigg and husband Monty of Black Hawk, S.D., Jolene Anderson and husband Jim of Carnation, WA. and Rex Kraft and wife Bonnie of Watonga, OK.  Twenty one grandchildren, thirty five great grandchildren and fifteen  great great grandchildren, her sister Alberta Beck of Katy, TX., a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Greta was a strong symbol of true America and quite a woman . . . giving all of herself and not expecting anything in return.
