IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Marquita Faye
(White) Ladd
July 5, 1941 – April 29, 2024
Marquita Faye White Ladd, a mother, grandmother, sister and friend passed away peacefully on April 29, 2024, at the age of 82 at Homestead Senior Living Center in Elk City, Oklahoma, surrounded by her family. On July 5, 1941, Floyd Raymond (Jack) White and Mary Anastasia (Reith) White, welcomed their first child, Marquita Faye, into this world. Marquita would soon be surrounded by a baby brother and two sisters. She attended Horace Mann Elementary School and completed her education, graduating with the Woodward Boomer class of 1959.
After high school, this quiet, meek, and shy young lady went on to work her first job as a waitress at the Palomino Cafe, and then landed her first full time job as a bookkeeper at the Stock Exchange Bank, where she worked for many years. It was during this time she began attending the Arnett Dances with her girlfriends and sister Janice. "I quit my job at the bank when a very enchanting farmer asked me to marry him," said Marquita. Her dream of becoming a farmer's wife came true on October 18, 1969, when she and Keith Ladd were married at St. Peter's Catholic Church. They made their home on the Ladd family farm just west of Camargo. There, she enjoyed learning all the "Keith" ways of farm life. On September 1, 1970, Keith and Marquita welcomed their first child, Karla Rae, and on September 2, 1972, welcomed yet another daughter, Marcia Lynn. Together with their girls, they worked to survive and thrive on the farm.
Marquita was a true farmer's wife. She worked beside Keith driving the tractor and wheat truck, working, hauling, and moving cattle, cleaning grain bins, and building fence. She served up four course meals complete with home raised beef, vegetables from her large garden, and homemade bread from grain off the truck. Winters were spent playing games at the table after the dishes were done, and Saturdays were for cleaning the house and doing laundry with a wringer machine and a clothesline for many years. She enjoyed making clothing for her girls, her husband and herself. She taught both her girls to sew, craft, garden, can, cook and meal plan. Marquita was well known for her creativity behind a sewing machine or craft table. She could sew, twill, tat, embroidery, crochet, knit, cross stitch, needlepoint, craft paint, paint by number, build leaded stained glass and play piano. She taught her girls that if it was worth doing, it was worth doing right, so always do your best.
Feeding a family on a farmer's budget required a great deal of skill and forethought. Marquita never stopped learning to make things, and to be thrifty in the process. To the girls, it seemed the hotter the kitchen was, the better she liked it. Many summer days began early in the mornings picking garden produce, and then, to the kitchen table to prepare the produce. The cook stove was fired up, and the cellar shelves would soon be packed with freshly canned produce for the winter months ahead.
Although a hard worker, Marquita loved to play hard as well. She loved to go dancing, play board games, cards, and computer games. She loved a good game of Pitch, and entertaining in her home or elsewhere, and planning get togethers.
In 1974, Marquita joined the Camargo O.H.C.E. "Club". She was a member of the Camargo club for 50 years, holding many local and county offices and received many member awards, and certificates, and in 1995 was named "Homemaker of the Year." The Dewey County Election Board, Camargo School Board, and South Canadian Neighbors were just a few of the other ways she served her community.
Marquita was a loving mother to her children and grandchildren. She adored spending time with her grandchildren and loved attending their school activities and programs. She was very proud of her family. Marquita loved with her whole heart, never forgot a birthday or special occasion, took it upon herself to be a caregiver to her family, and was always there, for everything. Marquita is preceded in death by her parents, husband Keith W. Ladd, sister, Marlene Whitson, brother-in-law, Charles Whitson, and brother-in-law, Ron Cross. Left to cherish her memory are daughter Karla R. Stone and husband David of Fargo, daughter Marcia L. Barr and husband Justin of Harmon, grandchildren Austin Stone and wife Katie, Levi Stone, Patricia Spencer and husband David, Ashley Steadman, Dawson Barr, and Jacee Barr. Great-grandchildren, Nash Stone, Dean Spencer and Walker, Eleanor and Stella Stone, sister, Janice Cross of Canon City, Colorado, and brother Larry L. White of Rossville, Georgia.
