Martha Ann Symons, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away on July 1, 2023, at the age of 85. She was born on November 14, 1937, to O.J. and Vera Butler in Taloga, Oklahoma. Martha's remarkable life was filled with love, adventure, and a deep passion for her family and community.
Martha spent her early years in Taloga, where she grew up under the loving guidance of her parents. In her 11th grade, she moved to Woodward and continued her education there. She met the love of her life, William (Bill) L. Symons. The couple exchanged vows on June 7, 1956, in Borger, Texas, and began a beautiful journey together.
Martha and Bill lived in various places throughout Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle, establishing roots in different communities. Their nomadic lifestyle changed when Bill completed his college education at OSU, obtaining a degree in real estate appraisal. In 1964, they settled in Burleson, Texas, where they raised their children until they finished high school. In 1977, the family moved to Washington, OK, and later to Antlers, OK, where they resided until 1984. Eventually, they returned to Woodward, where they would spend the rest of their life.
Martha played a pivotal role in Bill's appraisal company, serving as his dedicated assistant and secretary. Her exceptional organizational skills and unwavering support contributed to the success of the business. Additionally, she worked as a secretary for Farm Bureau Insurance. She enjoyed going to visit her father at M&M Tractor dealership in Taloga, spending time with him and the tractors.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Martha had a zest for life and a wide range of interests. She was an avid enthusiast of rodeos, sports, and particularly enjoyed watching her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren participate in various sports and activities. Martha had a passion for horses and took delight in raising them, especially watching the colts grow. She was an ardent supporter of OSU basketball and the Oklahoma Thunder basketball team, dedicating her time to cheer for her favorite teams.
Martha's athletic prowess was evident from her high school days. She was an outstanding hot shot basketball player and also participated in track and field events, where her speed was unmatched. Her talent extended to the rodeo arena, where she achieved great success. In 1959, Martha qualified for the National Finals Rodeo, showcasing her remarkable skills. She was an active member of the Texas Barrel Racing Association, where she served as their dedicated secretary. Additionally, she was part of the GRA (Girls' Rodeo Association), which later became the WPRA (Women's Professional Rodeo Association).
Martha Ann Symons will be deeply missed and forever cherished by her loving family and the many friends she made throughout her life's journey. Her infectious laughter, generous spirit, and unwavering support will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
She is preceded in death by her husband Bill Symons, parents O.J. and Vera Butler, sister Peggy Butler, and brother Irven Butler
She is survived by her children B.J. Symons and wife Gwen of Woodward, OK, and Carol Annette Symons of Woodward, OK. Martha also leaves behind 6 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and one on the way, numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and a host of friends all who will remember her fondly.
