Melvin J. Franks, of Vici, Oklahoma, passed from this life Saturday, June 5, 2010 at Seiling Municipal Hospital. He was 92 years old.
Melvin was born September 27, 1917 near Richmond, Oklahoma to Nathan and Minnie (Ladd) Franks. Melvin grew up in the Richmond community and graduated from high school in 1937 from Richmond School. Melvin joined the Army Air Corps in 1942 and served at the rank of Staff Sergeant. During his enlistment he was stationed in North Africa servicing airplanes, electronic equipment and radios. He was later transferred back to the states to Mitchell Air Force Base in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. While stationed there he met and married Bernice Flamm on November 28, 1946 at St. Lucas Lutheran Church in Milwaukee. Melvin and Bernice made their home in Milwaukee. He worked for Sorgel Electric for many years. On December 25, 1992 his wife of 40 years passed away.
Melvin moved back to the Vici area and in 1995 married Shila K. Atwell. They made their home in Woodward for a time before moving to Weatherford, Oklahoma to be near Shila's daughter, due to Shila's failing health. Shila passed away on October 13, 2005.
Melvin again moved back to Vici and has resided at the Vici Manor Apartment until his passing. Melvin has been loved by all who knew him. He served for many years in St. Lucas Lutheran Church in Milwaukee volunteering his time to for many church activities. He also volunteered his time at the local thrift shop working on all the electrical appliances that came in. While living in Weatherford, he was the "fix-up" guy at the Weatherford Assisted Living Home.
Those preceding Melvin in death are wives, Bernice Franks and Shila Franks; parents, Nathan and Minnie Franks and brother, Hilbert L. Franks.
Family remaining to cherish his memory are nephew, Larry Franks and wife Wanda of Guymon, Oklahoma; step-daughter, Carolyn Burchett and husband Stuart of Weatherford, Oklahoma; step-son, Dale Atwell and wife Gayle of Tulsa, Oklahoma; special God-daughter, Kiara Downs & husband Gary of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; other family members and many friends.
Memorials may be made to Father Flanagan's Boys and Girls Town or Vici Nursing Home.
