Melvin Leon Cole nicknamed Buzzy as a toddler by his mother, entered mortal life as a heavy weight weighing in at ten pounds. He was born in the family home east and south of Vici on June 19, 1938 to Vern and Irene Hunter Cole. A sister, Merlene, welcomed his birth. Brother Dale, sister Marva, and Brother Leland joined the family in 1940, 1944, and 1947.
Buzz began school in a one room rural building at Pleasant Ridge. After attending three years at Pleasant Ridge a specialist in Oklahoma City advised Buzz's parents that he was not capable of learning reading, writing, and doing arithmetic. His mother continued to try to teach him for some time. Buzz always fondly recalled his school days, the other students, and the teachers.
Buzz and Dale were close to their Cole cousins, Everett, Keith, and Dean who lived on a neighboring farm. They spent many days along the creek and over the hills portraying cowboys and Indians, and hunting small animals.
In today's terminology Buzz would be considered a special needs person. He truly was special with attributes of being loyal, dependable, generous, courageous, friendly, optimistic and willing to give a helping hand to anyone. He eagerly looked forward to the yearly planting and harvesting of wheat. He worked for numerous farmers. Seldom did Buzz enter a place of business in surrounding towns without seeing a person or persons he knew and considered a friend. Buzz was a tremendous help to his mother in the farming and operating of the family farm following the death of his father in 1960. Buzz moved to his Vici home in 1987.
Buzz looked forward to the local rodeos, trail drives, basketball games, and various community activities. Dancing was a favorite recreation.
Buzz had a tender heart for any child, reminding us of when followers brought young children for Jesus to touch. Jesus said unto them, "suffer the little children to come unto me and forbid them not, for of such is the Kingdom of God." Buzz became a faithful member of the First Christian Church of Vici in 1990. His membership was with the Community Christian Church following its organization. He was an eager laborer in the remodeling of a former business building into a lovely place dedicated to worship of the Savior.
Buzz suffered multiple broken bones. He overcame cancer of the face which included total restoration of his nose with the medical skills of doctors and the healing power of Jesus. His brother Leland was Buzz's companion and support during the many surgeries and multiple trips to Oklahoma City. Buzz was diagnosed with a blood disease in March, 2009. Following the diagnosis he received weekly blood transfusions in Woodward. He never murmured or complained during his sufferings. When asked how he was, he would always say "just fine".
Buzz was preceded in death by his father, Vern Cole; infant brother, Bobby Dewayne; brother, Dale; and brother-in-law, Duane Moss. He is survived by his 94 year old mother, Irene Cole Bentley and stepfather Howard Bentley; by sisters, Merlene Cole Moss of Brownfield, TX and Marva Cole Salisbury of Plainview, TX; by brother, Leland Cole and wife Jody of Vici, OK; by 10 nieces, 3 nephews, 17 great nieces, 20 great nephews, 3 great-great nieces, 1 great-great nephew, 6 aunts, 3 uncles and numerous cousins and a multitude of friends.
