On September 29, 1931, Melvin Leroy Morris was born at Webb, OK, to John and Jessie (Greer) Morris. He passed from this life April 26, 2022 in Oklahoma City, OK. He was 90 years of age.
Leroy grew up at Webb, attended grade school at Long Creek, and then attended High School at Camargo through the 11 th grade. Leroy moved to Homestead, OK, as a teenager where he met Glenda Wilson, the love of his life. They were united in marriage on February 13, 1950, at Enid, OK. The couple lived most of their married life in northwestern Oklahoma after short stays in Colorado and Nevada. They settled in the Taloga area for good in 1960. This union was blessed with six children: Roy Lee, Daniel Glenn, Michael Leon, Keith Wayne, Kenneth Layne, and Diane Mary.
Two of Leroy's favorite hobbies were racing horses and visiting. He enjoyed many mornings of coffee and conversation at Wheeler Brothers elevator in Taloga. He also took great joy in attending annual family reunions and various gatherings. Leroy enjoyed playing pitch, pitching horseshoes, shooting pool, and playing dominoes. After losing Glenda, he often traveled on various bus trips with the Jamboree Travelers.
Leroy had a unique set of skills. He worked at the Southard gypsum plant, skinned minks on a mink farm in Colorado, picked fruit in various orchards, drove a Gold Spot dairy truck and owned two fuel stations. His true passion was found in farming and ranching, where he raised cattle, wheat, and cotton. Even after retirement, he continued his love of growing things in his garden. His favorite things to share with family and friends were asparagus and sweet potatoes.
Leroy was the Mayor of Taloga for 6 years and was very proud of the fact that the town streets were paved during his tenure. He served on the board of the Rural Water Department, was a member of the Taloga Senior Citizens, and was a faithful supporter of numerous charitable organizations. Most recently, he proudly served as the GRAND MARSHAL of the 4 th of July and Christmas parades in Taloga.
He dedicated his life to Jesus and was saved at the Taloga Assembly of God Church, where he became a very active member.
Leroy was preceded in death by his parents, John and Jessie Morris; his wife Glenda Morris; sisters, Ruth Hiler, Alma Boyd, Velma Baker and Thelma Bellew; brothers, Norman Morris, Freddie Morris, Alvin Morris, Arthur Morris, and Elmer Morris; daughter-in-law, Vicki Morris; and infant twin granddaughters, Lisa and Lori Morris.
