Obituary

Mildred Gertrude Fairchild Fisher, 107, died April 19, 2013 at Sterling House in Chickasha, Oklahoma. The third child of Nora Spencer Fairchild and John Emery Fairchild, she was born April 14, 1906 at Mountain Park, Oklahoma Territory.

Mildred graduated from Taloga High School in 1924 and the following year began teaching in Antelope Valley near Billings where her father and grandfather had previously taught. Alternately teaching and going to college, she attended Southwest Teacher's College at Weatherford and Oklahoma A&M, receiving her B.S. degree in 1941 from A&M. Mildred met her husband Ted, (Theodore) R. Fisher while they were both teaching. They were married May 28, 1932 in Shawnee, Oklahoma.

Mildred's 41 year teaching career had many highlights. During WWII she served as County Superintendent of Schools of Kay County while Ted taught cadets in primary flight school. After they moved from Oklahoma, both taught on the Navajo and Hopi Indian Reservations in Arizona. They finished their teaching careers in California, returning to Oklahoma after retirement. Mildred moved to Chickasha in 2003.

At age 91, Mildred received the Woman of the Year Award from the town of Taloga and was inducted into the Dewey County Hall of Fame. She was a centenarian in Salt of the Red Earth, a book celebrating Oklahoma's centennial.

Because her husband Ted was a pilot, Mildred also learned to fly. She and Ted owned a small plane and both enjoyed flying it. Even at 95, Mildred was thrilled with a helicopter ride as a birthday present.

Mildred's husband Ted, five sisters and a brother preceded her in death. She is survived by Carolyn Burkhead of Norman, Danny Kelly of Duncan, Minnetta Hall and Ted Palmer of Oklahoma City, Charles and Mike Fairchild of Camargo, Gail Thompson of Edmond, Pearl Castor of Moreland, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mildred has spent the past ten years at Sterling House. Her family would like to thank all those who became her fast friends and helpers. She enriched the lives of all who knew her and celebrated many wonderful birthdays with friends and family who were blessed to have her as the matriarch.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Emery Fairchild Scholarship, Bank 7, P.O. Box 45, Camargo, Oklahoma 73835.
