IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mona Marie
Boren
February 8, 1930 – January 13, 2025
Ramona "Mona" Marie (Green) Boren was born on February 8, 1930 to parents Cliff and Ruth Green at the home of her Grandma Knittel in Mooreland, Oklahoma. She spent much of her childhood and early adult life in Holtville, California where she graduated in 1948. It was in Holtville where she met the love of her life, Melvin Allen Boren. The two lovebirds eloped from California to Yuma, AZ, as Melvin was entering the U.S. Army, and they were betrothed on May 29, 1949. They subsequently made their first home at Fort Bliss, Texas.
To this union, a daughter Delores Ann (DeeAnn) Boren was born in 1950. Shortly thereafter in 1953 Dale Allen Boren was born to this marriage followed by Donald Arthur in 1954. Their family was completed as a family of 6 after the addition of another son, David Andrew, to this union in 1962. While in California with her young family, Mona was active in the local parent teacher association, Blue Birds, Cub Scouts, and she was a member of a bowling league. In 1967, Melvin and Mona moved their family from El Centro, CA to Camargo, OK to purchase a grocery store as Melvin always dreamed of having his own business. Mona worked closely alongside Melvin and her children through the years they owned Camargo Grocery. She subsequently followed Melvin to work in the meat market at England Grocery in Seiling, OK and the two later opened Mel's Diner in Camargo, OK. Mona ultimately worked part-time at the Camargo Country Store before finally retiring well into her 80s. Mona and Melvin enjoyed buying and selling antiques and other collectibles over the later years of their marriage, at one time having an old Camargo school bus they took to and from flea markets where they would set up. A definite favorite for them was the Mangum Rattlesnake Hunt. She also enjoyed going back to Holtville as she could to attend the Carrot Carnival with her children, and often her sister and daughters-in-law, to reminisce with old classmates and see family. She was active with local Civic Organizations including The South Canadian Neighbors where she would often be found taking attendance and once receiving the "Good Neighbor Award." Through most of her adult life she enjoyed various line and square dance clubs including The Rounders in California and The Good Time Gals in Camargo.
Mona was a devout Roman Catholic where she was baptized into the faith as an infant on February 23, 1930. She attended regular mass at St. Peters Catholic Church in Woodward, OK or Sacred Heart in Mooreland, OK. She was proud of her faith, and through her example there remains a strong Christian faith carried forward amongst her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. The one thing she took great pride in was knowing that her family knew the Lord as their Savior, and she lived this out in her own life. The fruits of her faith were evident in how she treated others she encountered through her various careers in service, how her in-laws spoke of her with respect to inclusion and genuine love exhibited toward them as they married into the family, and in her love and focus on family.
Mona was one of four sisters along with a brother whom they unfortunately lost at a young age. As she and her sisters, Pat, Connie, and Lynette began having growing families of their own, they carried on their love for each other and family in beginning the Green Family Reunion tradition in the 1980s. This was a time cherished by her and her sisters, along with the growing families including addition of numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many in-laws. These reunions brought out the best in Mona and her sisters and family through various activities including karaoke nights, chicken foot domino tournaments, wine and gift exchanges, kids running around all over, and late night conversations to reminisce about old times, the growth of their families, and a frosty beverage. To this day, these reunions carry on every 2-3 years where members of the Green family from California, Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma, and everywhere in between meet as one large family. This is a legacy she would be most proud of.
Mona cherished her family, from her own kids to her grandkids, great-grandkids, and most recently great-great grandkids. She continually reminded them that she "loved them the mostest," and she tried with all of her might up until her very last days to attend events her grandkids were involved in. She loved sports and was a frequent attendee of baseball and basketball games for her grands and great-grands. She always said she had the "best and the brightest" of children and grandchildren, and these were values and words she instilled into all her family. In fact, all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren thought they were her favorite, even though Dale Jr. and Dara Dawn believed otherwise. Christmas Eve Catholic Mass, Dirty Santa and gift exchanges, Christmas day stockings, haircuts in her living room, cookie jars always full, hearing and saying back "I Love You the Mostest," Green Reunions, recurrent requests for "kisses on the cheek," and the importance of family are all things that she would want us to remember as she transitions to her forever Heavenly home to be united with her Lord and Savior and the love of her life, Melvin.
