Nada Pearl Turner Rathbun was born February 2, 1934 to Audrey & Maggie Turner on the family farm south of Vici, OK. At the age of 8 or 9 yrs, their family moved into town where her parents managed the Vici café.
Nada attended school in Vici. Her sister, Leta, remembers the 'whoopings' Nada gave to all the boys in town and that they were all afraid of her. She always had come-backs to any comments that were made to her. Nada enjoyed sports. She was a member of the girls' basketball team and played summer softball. Nada met Leonard when she was 12-13 yrs of age and they became friends. Their friendship grew and on September 25, 1951 they married in Mineral Wells, TX where they were living and working. In November, 1951 they returned to Vici, OK and started their family. During their marriage, the road traveled took them many places. Their family eventually grew to 5 children: Ricky Lee, Rusty Lynn, Randy Layne, Ronnie Lawayne and Robin Lanita. Although Nada's calling in life was being a mother, she also worked outside the home. One job she was especially proud of was working for the Perryton Police Department as a dispatcher, meter maid and school crosswalk attendant. Additionally, the various jobs as a waitress; co-owner and manager of Shamrock Café in Turpin, OK; assistant manager of a motel and convenience store assistant brought her many friendships through the years.
In 1966, the family moved to Turpin, OK where the kids attended and graduated from Turpin H.S. Her kids participated in school sports and activities that kept Nada and Leonard very busy. Turpin H.S. students chose Nada and Leonard to be Class Parents during their kids' Jr. and Sr. school years. The kids always knew Mom and Dad were 'in the stands' supporting them as they never missed an activity. Nada couldn't have been a prouder mom. She kept newspaper clippings and programs on all of her kid's sports and school activities.
Even after their children grew up, married and started families of their own, family continued to be an important part of Nada's life. She treasured her 14 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. She had a special connection with children of all ages. Each time a new grandchild arrived, she made a special trip to help the new 'dad and mom'. She was always there when a call came out from her family. Holidays together as a family were important to Nada as they were for her when she was growing up. She cherished this time together, playing games, laughing, telling stories of days gone by. You never worried about hunger as the food was in abundance. You could always find Nada in her kitchen fixing holiday meals; trying new recipes or baking her kids or grandkids their favorite desserts.
In June 2006, Nada and Leonard made their final home in Uniontown, KS to be closer to their family. Nada is survived by her husband, Leonard, of the home; her 4 sons and spouses, Rick L. and Lennie of Ozawkie; Rusty L. and Dulene of Wichita; Randy L. and Bonnie of Uniontown; Ronnie L. and Pamela of Tyler, TX and 1 daughter, Robin L. Browning and husband, Jake of Minco, OK; 14 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren; 1 brother, Duane Turner of Woodward, OK and 1 sister, Leta Padgett of Lefors, TX.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one grandson, Travis Rathbun; 2 brothers, Paul Davis and Cecil Turner and 1 sister, Naomi Turner.
~There was never any doubt of the love she shared with us all. How fortunate and blessed we are to have had her in our lives! ~
