Obituary

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Norman Lee Bay, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and community pillar. Norman departed this life on April 21, 2024, in Shattuck, Oklahoma, at the age of 84. He was born on September 12, 1939, in Shattuck to Willie and Norma (Deal) Bay.

Norman grew up in Shattuck and graduated from Shattuck High School in 1957, where he made a name for himself on the football field for his incredible speed. On February 9, 1958, Norman enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving with honor until his discharge on August 8, 1958. After his military service, he attended Oklahoma State University, where he met Helen Ruth Bomhoff on a blind date. They married on December 27, 1959, at the Geary First Christian Church, beginning a love story that would last until Helen's passing.

The couple raised three sons, David, Mark, and Don. Norman pursued a degree in education at Northwestern Oklahoma State University, after which he returned to Shattuck to run his ranch and farm, as well as teach and sell irrigation equipment. He was a man of many interests and loved spending time with his family, especially enjoying water skiing, boating, and watching his grandchildren play sports.

Norman had a special fondness for hunting and never kept his hunting dog in a pen. His wife's quail and rice casserole was a family favorite. The memories of loading up the great green station wagon for trips to Red River after the wheat harvest are cherished by his children and grandchildren.

A dedicated member of the community, Norman served on the school board, was active in the Shattuck Lion's Club, and participated in the FFA. He even won a milo yield competition. His faith was strong, and he was a dedicated member of the Shattuck Methodist Church, attending services every Sunday, even when it was difficult.

Norman was known for his fairness, generosity, and unwavering dedication to his family and community. He led by example and was a source of inspiration to many.

Norman is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Helen Bay, and his parents, Willie and Norma Bay. He is survived by his sons, David Bay and wife Tammie, Mark Bay and wife Kerie, and Donald Bay and wife Mary, all residing in Shattuck, Oklahoma; thirteen grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

The family expresses their sincere gratitude to Newman Memorial Hospital and Traditions Hospice for their compassionate care. Norman's memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
