Paul, the youngest of five children born to Sam and Jessie (Nelson) Huffman arrived on September 6, 1921 in the Huffman family home northeast of Mutual, Oklahoma. Paul passed away on December 20, 2009 at Yukon, Oklahoma at the age of 88 years, 3 months, and 14 days. Paul and his older brother Charles, and two neighbor boys, Max and Rex Severe were avid youthful hunters and trappers. A neighbor rancher, Gene Ellington allowed the boys to roam his ranch until they outgrew this phase of life.
Paul attended Mutual Public Schools. As a first and second grader Paul stuttered so much that the teacher occasionally had to call on one of his sisters, Frances or Lois, to decode what he was saying. He graduated from high school in 1939 and entered the Southwestern University School of Pharmacy in Weatherford, Oklahoma that fall. When World War II broke out, Paul entered the U.S. Navy as a Hospital Apprentice 2nd Class and was sent to U.S. N. Hospital at San Diego, California for training. After being there for about 6 months, Paul was transferred to the U.S. Marine Corp. to serve as medical personnel. Paul was attached to the 2nd Marine Division and the 2nd Tank Battalion of that division. In October of 1942 this division departed San Diego for action in the South Pacific. His division arrived in New Zealand in the middle of December to regroup with the Marines that had been in battle for the Guadalcanal campaign. After 3 months in New Zealand, Paul's unit embarked for a campaign of the Marianis Island. Having been overseas for 3 years, Paul was eligible for transfer back to the United States, arriving in San Francisco, California in the fall of 1944. Paul was stationed at Treasure Island for 4 months while waiting for transfer to another base.
In February of 1945, Paul was granted 2 weeks leave and transferred to Brooklyn Naval base in New York, New York. It was while on leave that Paul married his high school sweetheart, Helena Blondell Schmidt on February 21, 1945 in the Methodist Parsonage in Sharon, Oklahoma. That same day the couple boarded a train to make their home in Brooklyn, New York. While there Blondell worked on Wall Street as a glass underwriter for the Great Southern Insurance Company. With the end of the war, Paul was discharged in October, 1945. He returned to Pharmacy school at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford to finish his degree in 1946 graduating as the President of his college class. Blondell, already having obtained a degree in accounting, graduated from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in 1946 with a second degree in music.
For a short period, Paul and Blondell lived in Rolla, Kansas where Paul served as the Principal of the school and taught Science while Blondell taught Music and English. From 1950 to 1956, Paul and Blondell lived in a two room house in Sharon next door to her Parents, Jake and Katie Schmidt. Paul worked the Huffman Family Farm with his brother Charles and father Sam for that decade. Blondell taught school in Vici and Sharon during that time.
In 1956, the Huffman's moved to Arnett, Oklahoma when Paul purchased the Arnett Drug Company and Blondell became a member of the teaching staff at Arnett Public Schools where she taught from 1958 through 1990. In May of 1959 a baby boy was born, David Paul to Paul and Blondell, sadly, he only lived a few hours. Later that same year, Paul and Blondell adopted daughter Katie Je' on August 3rd and son David Chan on August 29th. Two years later they adopted son, Robben Paul on August 13, 1961. Their children became their pride and joy.
Paul served the Arnett Community well in his 50 plus years of residence. He and Blondell were members of the Arnett Methodist Church both serving in many capacities. Paul served as the Mayor of Arnett, The Arnett Fire Department, the Arnett School Board, Kiawanis and was a dedicated Boy Scout Leader. For the past 22 years Paul served on the advisory Board for the Farmers & Merchants Bank, an honor he was quite proud of. Paul was active at the Arnett Sr. Center and delivered "meals on wheels". Paul was dedicated to improving his community with the contribution of his time, money, patriotism and counsel.
