Obituary

Pauline Delpha Alvis was born on June 4th, 1934, on the family farm north of Putnam, to Paul Ambrose and Ella Mae (Rodden) Laird. Pauline attended school at Independence for the first 10 years and then graduated from Putnam High in 1952. In May 1953, she married Elmer P. Alvis Jr. and they moved to Norman, OK where Pauline worked for a lawyer in Oklahoma City while Elmer was in engineering school at the University of Oklahoma. Later they lived in Colorado and Texas and along the way they had four daughters. Pauline earned a Bachelor's degree in education from Steven F. Austin and a Master's degree from the University of Texas in Tyler. While teaching elementary school in Tyler she worked mentoring children, helping them learn to read, and she especially loved teaching first grade. She was promoted to consultant to help other teachers as well as students.

Upon moving to Grand Prairie, Texas she retired and took up her passion of being the family social director. She loved having reunions, planning dinners, and being the president of the neighborhood social club. Pauline always loved social activities that helped others and she was a Girl Scout leader for many girls in Texas and Oklahoma. Upon Elmer's retirement in 1994 they moved to Thomas, OK to enjoy the farm life they missed. Pauline served as president of the Dewey County Historical Society and held many offices in the community organizations. She was a member of the Mayflower Society and the DAR. Pauline has been a member of the First Methodist Church in Thomas and the First Christian Church in Putnam. Pauline always loved working with children, giving them lessons, and she also started reading programs for the Putnam community. She was always ready to take her grandchildren on adventures to historical places in the area.

Pauline was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Ella Laird, her husband of 61 years Elmer, cousins Lathan Laird and Steven Laird. She is survived by her sister Roberta Stewart (Laird) of Fairborne, OH; her four daughters: Pamela (Donald) Black, Cynthia (Ralph) Edwards, Debra (David) Gilbert, and Ruth (Rick) Pierson. Surviving grandchildren are: Patricia (Ryvers) Cook, Phillip (Jocelyn) Walker, Paula (Josh) Kapper,Tara (Jerron) White, Jeremy (Nora) Edwards, Matt (Melanie) Edwards, Daniel (Lindsey) Gilbert, Drew Gilbert; Dale Gilbert; Kira Pierson, and Elena Pierson.
