Peggy Sue Cox

Peggy Sue Cox of Bel Aire, KS, passed away at the age of 83 on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, KS.

Peggy was born on September 23, 1942, at the Community Hospital in Elk City, OK, to Frank Williams and Mary Ellen Wherritt Williams. Peggy was six years old when her brother Fred was born, and her sister Penny joined the family 13 years after that.

Peggy grew up on a farm 13 miles from Leedey, OK. Like most farm kids she was expected to do her part, which included bringing in the milk cows from the pasture at night, gathering the eggs, helping out in the barn with milking and feeding, dusting the furniture in the house, and watching Fred who tried to climb anything he could.

Peggy attended public school in Leedey. When asked if she ever skipped school, she said, “Heavens no! Mama had eyes everywhere.”

Peggy met her husband, Billy Duke Cox, at Southwestern Oklahoma State University, and they were married on May 28, 1961, in Morewood, OK. A few years later they had three sons: twins Larry Dwayne and Terry Dean in 1964, followed by David Ray in 1966. As the wife of a schoolteacher/superintendent, Peggy was very involved in the community and especially in the church, taking an active part in the United Methodist Women’s organization. She also enjoyed quilting and always had one or two in process. As a family, they enjoyed camping and fishing and being outdoors. In their retirement years, Peggy and Billy enjoyed traveling in their RV and drove the entire Alaska Highway. They also spent nine summers volunteering with the Forrest Service information center high in the Rocky Mountains at Rico, CO. They resigned from the Forrest Service in 2013 when Billy was diagnosed with cancer. They moved to Enid, OK, and in 2021 moved to Bel Aire, KS, to be closer to their oldest son, Larry.

Peggy is survived by her three sons: Larry Cox and wife Sandy of Wichita, KS; Terry Cox and Janet Mickelson of Albertville, MN; and David Cox and wife Melissa of Denton, TX. She’s also survived by four grandchildren: Jason, Brett, and Amber Cox of Wichita, KS, and Kegan Cox of Denton, TX. Other family members include her brother Fred Williams and wife Billie of Haskell, OK; brother-in-law Scott Haynes of Elk City; brother-in-law Berge Cox and wife Sharon of Great Bend, KS; sister-in-law Kathy Cox of Coweta, OK; sister-in-law Elaine Cox of Oklahoma City, OK; and numerous nieces and nephews and many friends from their RVing days as well as church friends.

Peggy was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Mary Williams, her loving husband Billy Cox, her sister Penny Haynes, sisters-in-law Mary and Betty Cox, brothers-in-law Tony and Vernon Dale Cox, and parents-in-law Bill and Marion Cox.
