Robert Allen Messenger was born September 26, 1941 in Duncan, Oklahona to Carl Henry and
Dorothy Marie Jaco Messenger. He passed from this life on January 31, 2017. Robert was the
oldest brother to Lavene, Charlotte and Sam and they were raised in the breaks of the Salt
Fork of the Red River north of Hollis.
Robert graduated from Vinson High School in 1959 and later graduated from Central State
University in Edmond, Oklahoma with a degree in accounting. He married Sharon Sheid in
August 1962. Robert and Sharon lived in Tulsa and Robert worked for PanAmerican Petroleum
until he was drafted into the United States Army in June 1966. He served 2 years in the
Vietnam War as an Artillery Fire Direction Officer. Sharon moved back to Hollis to wait for
Robert and they lived in Hollis for many years after he was discharged. They welcomed two
children Mark and Marci. Robert and Sharon spent most of their life farming and ranching.
Robert later worked as a rural mail carrier until he retired and they moved to Stillwater,
Oklahoma. The past few years he enjoyed spending time with grandchildren and taking his
1964 Thunderbird to Stillwater Classic Car Club shows.
Robert was known for a strong faith in God, gentle spirit, helping others, enjoying fast cars and
loving his family. He was a deacon in the Church of Christ in Hollis. Many described him as
the salt of the earth. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Lavene Palmore and
brother Sam Messenger, as well as brother and sister-in-law Charles and Gwen Sheid. He is
survived by his wife Sharon of Stillwater, children Mark and Lori Messenger of Woodward and
Marci and Ryan Miller of Stillwater, grandchildren Morgan and Maggie Miller, Madelyn and Jaco
Messenger, Ellen, Drew, Dax and wife Jada Grunewald, and brother-in-law and sister Jerry and
Charlotte Needham, and other in-laws Judy Messenger, Larry and Bonita Palmore, Carol and
Kay Sheid and many nieces and nephews.
A private celebration of life service was held by the family.
