IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Sharon Lea
(Day) Metzler
October 16, 1936 – June 17, 2024
At the age of 87, our beloved mother, "MeMe", and grandmother, Sharon Lea (Day) Metzler entered into the arms of her Savior and waiting loved ones on June 17, 2024.
Born October 16, 1936 on the farm, she was the second child of Leslie Charles and Wilma (Vinyard) Day. The very place she was born would be where she would spend her entire life (except that year she would just as soon forget), on the Trail Flats northeast of Leedey. Sharon attended Trail School before transferring to Leedey after the 8th Grade. Despite being severely club-footed, she loved to run track and help on the farm. She graduated from Leedey High School in 1954 with a class of 41 students.
On June 7, 1953, Sharon married her forever love, Wesley Metzler, at the home of Nick and Majorie Nichols in Leedey. Even though Sharon was married after her junior year, she made a promise to finish her high school education. After graduating, the couple moved to Amarillo, Texas, but within a year returned home. Wesley and Sharon first lived in the Rhea community before moving to their current home on the Trail Flats. To this union, they welcomed daughter Frances, in 1955 and son Charles, in 1959.
Sharon spent her life dedicated to the service of others. For many years, she served as a precinct official for the Dewey County Election Board. A member of the Leedey First Baptist Church since 1946, she worked in the nursery, taught GA's and Vacation Bible School, was a hostess for countless funeral meals, and led her Sunday School class, The Gleaners. Her passion for homemaking made her a natural leader of the Trail Home Demonstration Club. She was a talented seamstress, making clothes and doing alterations. She loved collecting jewelry, keeping up with the latest fashion trends, and believed in the motto "dress to impress". There were few things she enjoyed more than cooking for a crowd, whether it be a fish fry or her famous chocolate meringue pies. However, if there was one thing she enjoyed more than feeding hungry mouths, it would be watching basketball. If her Oklahoma City Thunder or Leedey Bison were playing, you can bet she was in the gym or glued to the TV.
Sharon was preceded in death by an infant brother, Jerry, her parents, Leslie and Wilma, daughter, Frances "Frannie" McClendon, nephews, Tracy and Troy Broadbent, and great grandson, Cody Frantz.
She is survived by her husband of 71 years, Wesley, of the home, sister, Carol Forbes of Gage, OK, son, Charles Metzler of Leedey, grandson, Klint McClendon of Leedey, granddaughters, Kathy (Corey) Frantz of Balko, OK, and Krista (Anthony) Sheetz of Burke, VA. Son-in-law, Roy McClendon of Leedey, sisters-in-law, Betty Hughes of Elk City, OK and Pam Wing of Mulvane, KS, three great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, her "adopted" kids, and a host of friends.
