Shirley Myers Moore (1936-2024)
Stillwater, Oklahoma. Shirley Myers Moore passed away on January 12, 2024, in Stillwater.
Shirley Jeanene Myers was born on November 12, 1936 to Herman and Viola Myers on their farm North of Camargo, Oklahoma. Shirley was the first born to the family with Jerry, Janice, and Mike arriving later. Shirley learned early to participate on the farm by gathering eggs, milking cows, and churning butter while looking after her younger siblings in the gyp hills North of Camargo.
When Shirley was in high school at Camargo, the family moved to their new home West of Camargo. Shirley was an all-star catcher for the Camargo Blackhawk softball team. She caught the eye of Robert ("Bob") Moore who was a volunteer coach for the lady Blackhawks during the summer of Shirley's senior year. Bob had just finished graduating from Oklahoma State University in the Air Force ROTC program and had enlisted in the United States Air Force. Shirley started college at Southwestern State College in Weatherford while Bob was in pilot training with the Air Force. Shirley and Bob continued dating and married on September 24, 1955. Shirley followed Bob during his service with the Air Force with their first born, Marcia, arriving in December of 1956 in Altus while Bob was serving at the Altus Air Force Base.
After completing his service with the Air Force, Bob took a job at Freedom, Oklahoma as the Vocational Agriculture Instructor. While at Freedom, Marcia was joined by three younger siblings, Mark, Leisa, and Kay, each almost one year apart. Shirley helped Bob and his family build a house across from the Freedom High School football field where the Moore family resided.
While raising four toddlers, Shirley began attending college at Northwestern State College in Alva, Oklahoma, which was a thirty-minute drive from Freedom. Shirley completed her education at Northwestern in 1965, receiving a degree in Elementary and Secondary Education.
In 1966, Bob and Shirley moved with their family back to Camargo where Bob became Principal of the Camargo Elementary School. Shirley took her first teaching position at the Vici Elementary School and began commuting to work ten miles away.
In 1969 on a family vacation in Colorado, Bob and Shirley decided to buy 160 acres of land next to the Sangre De Cristo National Forest near La Veta, Colorado. The land had dilapidated buildings and cabins that the Moore family began to restore. After completion of some of the work, the Moore family hosted summer camps and church groups with the family acquiring horses to take campers on trail rides into the mountains. In retirement, Bob and Shirley sold their land in Colorado and bought a home in Red River, New Mexico where they spent their summers escaping the Oklahoma heat.
In 1974, Bob and Shirley took their family to Canute, Oklahoma where Bob became Superintendent and Shirley resumed her elementary school teaching career. All four Moore children graduated from Canute High School with Marcia and Kay earning All-State Basketball honors.
In 1979, Bob and Shirley moved to Drummond, Oklahoma to be closer to their children who were attending Oklahoma State University. Shirley continued her elementary teaching in Drummond. Bob and Shirley were honored at an OSU football game with a Sheepskin rug for having four children enrolled at the same time at OSU in 1979. Although Shirley did not graduate from OSU, she was a good and loyal Cowboy fan throughout her life. While watching sporting events, Shirley would often make recommendations to OSU coaches on how their teams could play better.
After retiring from the Drummond Schools, Bob and Shirley began traveling across the world on cruises and trips. They always went on a "budget", which was the Moore way. Bob and Shirley also faithfully attended school and athletic activities of their seven grandchildren across Oklahoma and Texas.
Bob and Shirley moved from Drummond to Stillwater in 2019. In 2022, they celebrated their 67th Anniversary. Shirley was a faithful caregiver to Bob in the last three years of his life.
Shirley grew up in the Camargo Christian Church and began attending Methodist Churches after marrying Bob and raising their family. They regularly attended Methodist Churches in Freedom, Camargo, Canute, Drummond, and Stillwater.
Shirley is survived by her son, Mark and his wife Dee Ann, and her daughter Kay LeGrand and her husband Kevin. Shirley is preceded in death by her husband Bob, her daughters Marcia and Leisa, her parents Herman and Viola Myers, and her brother, Jerry Myers. Shirley is also survived by her son-in-law, Phil Cooke, and her grandchildren, Brooke Franks and her husband Chris, Lauren Sanchez and her husband Chris, Amanda Ritchie and her husband Christopher, Josh Moore and his wife Hillary, Kyle LeGrand and his wife Tera, Whitney Wolf and her husband Hunter, and Reid LeGrand and his wife Kacie. Shirley leaves behind fifteen great-grandchildren.
