Obituary

Shirley Jean Ackerman was born on July 31, 1935, to Edward and Genevieve Ackerman in Cherokee, Oklahoma.  She, with her parents and older brother Edward, Jr. lived with Grandmother Ackerman on the farm close to Burlington until 1941. The family then moved to Cherokee where Shirley started first grade and continued until her graduation in 1953.

After high school, in October 1953, Shirley married Fay Puffinbarger. The couple was blessed with a beautiful baby girl in August of 1955, Teresa Ann. The family of three relocated to Camargo in 1956. Soon thereafter, Monte Alan and Karen Jean made them a complete family. Upon moving to Camargo, Shirley was a homemaker where she loved, nurtured and cared for her children ensuring they had a childhood unlike any others. She loved her children more than anything. Her love for her children overflowed to other kids in the community and eventually led to Marlene Stephenson Badley joining the family until graduating from high school.

While living in Camargo, Shirley had many different jobs. Shirley was the proprietor of Camargo Hardware and the Camargo Cafe. Later, she worked at Camargo Schools serving in many different roles including school cook and various positions in the classroom. Later, having a passion to serve others, Shirley went into adult health care working at the Vici Nursing Home and then spending her later years working in private home care for various individuals, doing this until well into her seventies. Undoubtedly her most joyous job was being Ma, as she nannied several great grandchildren.

Shirley was an avid gardener with the greenest of thumbs. Each year she maintained an immaculate and beautiful flower garden. Shirley loved her dogs, always having multiple dogs at a time and never letting any one of them miss a meal. As a grandmother, her grandchildren and great grandchildren were the light of her eye. She followed them everywhere they went, and especially enjoyed watching them compete in sports. One of her most cherished awards was being named Vici Baseball Fan of the Year in 2001. Shirley was a very gifted artist, painting ceramics was her favorite, making many of these gifts for others commemorating special occasions.

Later in life, Shirley made her home outside Harmon, before moving to Cherokee where she cared for her mother. After the passing of her mother, she returned to Vici, and eventually settled in Camargo in 2013 where she lived until her death.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Ed and Genevieve Ackerman, infant brother Willard Ackerman, brother Edward Ackerman, Jr., great granddaughter Jacee Alexander and grandson-in-law Heath Richmond. She is survived by daughter Teresa and husband Danny Smith of Camargo, son Monte Puffinbarger of Camargo and daughter Karen Kuper of Vici, also by grandchildren, Brandy and husband Justin Alexander, Dustin and wife Megan Smith, Rusty and wife Deedra Puffinbarger, Jessie and husband Morgan Young, Zane Puffinbarger, Tisha and husband Rex Nunn, Kassie and husband Casey Moore, Nicole Kuper, Dalten Kuper, and Eric and wife Nicole Love, great grandchildren Jakob Alexander and fiance Allie Don Carlos, Jett Alexander, Hadly and Caroline Smith, Jack, Luke and Blake Puffinbarger, Asa and Ellis Young, Tennessee Lee and Kyler Nunn, Whitney and Blayne Richmond, Carson Moore, Beatrice, Isaac, Hannah, Seraphina, Abigail, Felix and Morgan Love and a host of friends.
