Susan Jean (Hughes) Ball was born December 19, 1963 to Ruby Irene (Byers) and Virgil Ray Hughes at Shattuck, Oklahoma. She passed away, after a lengthy illness, at the Shattuck Nursing Home on July 5, 2009 at the age of 45 years, 7 months, and 17 days. Susan, the youngest of four, was raised on the family farm south of Higgins, Texas. She attended grade school and high school at Higgins, receiving her GED. She later continued her education at the High Plains Vo-Tech in Woodward, Oklahoma. Susan accepted Christ as her personal savior in March, 1975 at the Higgins First Baptist Church. Susan was married to Joe Lynn Schafer on March 19, 1982 and to this union son, Jesse Joe Schafer, was born. Susan married Larry Eugene Ball on October 5, 1993 and to this union children, Dustin Gene Ball and Mandy Lynn Ball were born. Susan worked at the Newman Memorial Hospital at Shattuck, Oklahoma then later at the Best Way Store in Higgins, Texas. However, being a homemaker and a mother to her children was her life. In late 1996, Susan was diagnosed with leukodystrophy, a very rare brain disease. She lived at her home in Arnett until January, 2000 when she had to have 24 hour care and moved to the Shattuck Nursing Center. She was preceded in death by her father, Ray Hughes in 2007. Susan is survived by son, Jesse Schafer of Stillwater, OK, son, Dustin Ball, daughter, Mandy Ball, and mother, Ruby Hughes all of Arnett, OK; husband, Larry Ball of Woodward, OK; sister, Kathy Holloway and husband Rexie of Arnett, OK; brothers, Steve Hughes of Portales, NM and Clifton Hughes of Amarillo, TX; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other family and many friends.
